|
|
Hi there, i've been using gentoo on a few x86 machines for the last couples of months and now have a SPARC in my office that is mine to use. Now i don't know much about other types of hardware so i was hoping someone could tell me how fast this machine is in terms of x86 type speeds. All i really know about it is what it says on the front of the box...
"Sun Microsystems, ULTRA 10 Creator 3D"
and i also have an older one which is a
"SPARCstation LX"
It is currently running solaris 7.
Any help would be great, thanx. |

The Ultra10 is probably speedwise related to a high end Pentium 2 or a low end Pentium 3 CPU. The Sparcstation LX is probably closely related to say a 486. |

u10 is nice, jut put a bigger disk and more ram, the LX would be on the slow side.
The fun of sparc is the they are big endian and 64bit (ultrasparcs), so there is still some fun installing on these machines (no everything works from the 1st shot, you know what I mean

My 2 primary office gentoo boxes are a dell pentium pro 200 and a sparc ultra 10 like your own.
I have found the 2 systems to be of comparible speeds although video seems a bit faster on the ultra.
I loaded gentoo on the sparc, because it's the only distribution for sparc with current stuff on it. I am now using this box on a daily basis as an xterminal for our mosix cluster.
Everything works great, except the sound. I'm not sure if something's broken or being done wrong, but the driver loads but no noise.
Good luck. |
