Okay, I've about had it with DevFS - and I know I can build an entirely new Gentoo system without, but I really don't want to do that.. Is there a simple way to remove DevFS safely from my system and get a normal /dev/. |

On my debian partition, I switched from a regular /dev to devfs only by recompiling my kernel and including devfs support, and installing devfsd.
I think the reverse procedure might work, try compiling a new kernel without devfs and reboot |

I'm pretty sure Gentoo requires devfs. I once compiled a new kernel and forgot to enable devfs, and upon rebooting I got a message that Gentoo simple cannot function with devfs.
But anyway, people were complaining for years about the general state of /dev in Linux, and devfs was considered a godsend. Why get rid of it?

Because it's a mess, redundant code all over, and it's pretty much wreching my life, not creating /dev entries that are needed.
Sadly the small devfs patch is almost worse. |
