Hi folks,

I've got a problem with the automounting feature from KDE using plugdev and ivman.

If I use booth some USB sticks get mounted by username:users and some get mounted by ivman:plugdev. I can unmount the sticks which belong to username:users via the KDE menu. At the moment I have disabled ivman but my question is now: Do I need ivman or not? I've read the KDE automount HOW TO but could not find an answer to my question and instead of asking in the HOW TO I decided to open a new thread.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

emerge -av hal pmount

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

i GOT NO ERROR, is my kernel version incorrect for this ebuild ? i tried also +acpi as in your example.. but didnt work too

edit :
strange , the kde automount function is working here without "pmount" or "hal" ....i also didnt put my user into plugdev group as suggested : gpasswd -a <USER> plugdev, can please someone give a try to explain this to me ? thx a lot ...

Yes, 2.6.13 added support for functions that HAL requires (inotify), so you must upgrade your kernel to take advantage. Upgrade Guide

EDIT: In response to your edit, it is simply an option to have KDE use a HAL backend, however I've not tested or heard reports of how it works without HAL or pmount. Is it fully functional? Can you mount with the dialog a CD and a USB stick just fine?

Ivman is not required. However, be aware that this is assuming you're using KDE 3.5 and the automounting functionality built in. You do need ivman for proper automounting on KDE <=3.4.3

If I were you I'd run emerge --sync right now, you're a bit behind =). Gentoo sources include the Gentoo patchset, which includes features like splash... you'll want it.

Ok, thanks. I'am using KDE 3.5 allready. But after disabling ivman the USB sticks arent mounted automatically after pluggin them into the slot. I get an icon on the desktop but I have to "manually" open the folder in Konqueror to mount the volume.

Anyway thanks again for your response.

sorry but what is splash... ? do you mean gentoo-sources is with gentoo picture when booting ? and vanilla-sources are the original kernel versions published by kernel.org ?
