Does anyone know how to figure out the firmware version on a ND-3540A NEC drive, or any drive for that matter? Thanks.

Maybe emerge smartmontools, and smartmon -i /dev/hdXXX?

http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

Nec flash utility. It will flash the drive under linux, but also supports querying and changing booktype settings, as well as firmware info.
