hello there...i have downloaded a music CD which is ripped and encoded in .ape format...could anyone tell me how to play that file in my Gentoo box?? i use KDE and Amarok as my player...the .ape file isn't many tracks but the whole CD...thanks in advance...

i once posted an ebuild on bugs.gentoo.org. It will never hit portage it seems, but it's available up there ;)

which files should i download?? are the patches needed aswell?? or just the ebuild by itself is more than enough??

you will need the last ebuild media-libs/mac/mac-3.99.4.4.ebuild, and the two patches

although i would put it in media-sound, as lame, musepack-tools etc etc are in media-sound too

so is it a player or what?? from the name i understand that it is a monkey audio converter...does it convert the files from .ape to .mp3 for example?? can i use lame to do the encoding?? how?? if you could provide a bit more explanation i would be really greatful...thanks in advance...

could you please read the README which gets installed with that package and maybe take a look at the homepage of mac-port?!
you'll also find a bmp-mac and xmms-mac plugin there. amarok can play ape's using gst-monkeysaudio for which you'll also find some ebuilds on bugs.gentoo.org

but i would use the mac decoder to convert them to flac or something else which is easier to play
that's why i pointed you there.

google for "convert ape linux" ---> 2nd hit
