I recently did a gentoo install on a laptop, and after I had installed and configured most of the basic components, I did an "emerge -e system && emerge -e world" to cleanly recompile all pacakges on the system.

Unfortunately for me, this seems to have broken X, which no longer wants to start, dumping with the following error every time I try:

Code:
Symbol __glXgetActiveScreen from module /usr/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!

I tried changing the default module path in xorg conf to

Code:
 ModulePath "/usr/lib/modules"

but that doesn't seem to work either.

The machine has an Intel 855G graphics adaptor, and I was using the same xorg.conf file quite successfully with X before the "emerge -e world"

Any help running down this problem would be apreciated.

More oddities...X will start just fine as root with or without the DRI modules commented out. This is starting to seem more like a permissions problem than anything else.

I would really appreciate any help figuring this one out...I really have no idea where to go from here.

Do you have this in your xorg.conf file?

Code:
Section "DRI"
        Mode            0666
EndSection

Yup, it's down at the bottom. Forgot to include it in the above post.

Try deleting your /tmp folder then making a new one.

Didn't work.

Also tried another "emerge -e world", which also did not help.

I have been experimenting with it , and have found that the error about the DRI modules also appears when starting X as root, but X will start in spite of these errors. It is still only the user accounts which have problems starting X. This really seems like a permissions problem to me.

I compared the /etc/X11 directory on the problem laptop with the same directory on my functioning desktop, and I could not find any differences in configuration file ownership or permissions, and as far as I know, there is no particular group membership required to start X.

I am really have no idea where to go from here, so I would really appreciate hearing any ideas about what's causing this problem.
