ok I have this problem I just installed a new drive and did:
hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)


whats going on?

You have the IDE chipset specific code for your motherboard IDE chipset missing from your kernel.

It's a broadcom chip.

Look in the kernel under device drivers -> ATAPI/IDE/... (sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm not in linux right now to menuconfig on over there and find the exact names, maybe later)
