I have ALSA installed on my iMac slot loading and can not get it to cooperate with kde. When I go in the Control System in kde and select "Sound System" it gives me the following message:
Unable to start the sound server to retrieve possible sound I/O methods. Only automatic detection will be available.
Any ideas? |

Can you play sounds outside of kde (like with play)?
If yes, please output 'ls -l /usr/kde/3.*/bin/arts*' |

Code: | $ play somefile.wav |
should do the trick, if you don't have it installed
Code: | $ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp |
will do the trick. |

$ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp did the trick, I heard a noise, however, ls -l /usr/kde/3.*/bin/arts* gave me the error no such file or directory. |

Make sure that you don't have '-arts' in your use line, then 'emerge arts' (if you use the split kde ebuilds) or if you have the monolithic I think it will be 'kdemultimedia'. |

I emerged arts, however now whenever I try to start the sound system I get
"The application Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the singal 11 (SIGSEGV)
Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it? Please? |

I get
artsd version is 1.4.3
gsl: using Unix98 pthreads directly for mutexes and conditions
[artsd: 8585] parallel startup detected: sleeping
unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/mcop-matt/localhost-2182-43dcd5d7)
[artsd: 8585] SoundServerStartup --> got lock
autodetecting driver:
- toss: 4
- null: -1
- alsa: 15
- oss: 10
... which means we'll default to alsa
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory) |

I think that you'll need to rebuild kdelibs (be sure that '+alsa +arts' is listed) since you didn't have arts when originally built. You may want/need to set dmix also; searching the forum should provide a wealth of information on dmix. LMK if that gets things working. |

I'm not going to be at that computer for a bit, but once I get back I'll be sure to try it. Cross your fingers! |
