Hey,
Is there any way to append a file to a compressed archive like a .tar.bz2 without having to uncompress it, append it, then re-compress it?

No, not tar.bz2. The thing is, bzip2 compresses the tar archive as a single stream, so you can't add to the end of it.
If you want to be able to add files to a compressed archive, there are formats that allow this - 7zip, dar, zip, etc. _________________ No more cruft
