HELP! Totally new to everything including linux~

hey!
i realli need alot of help from u guys coz i am a newbie to not only gentoo but to the linux thingy so i dun understand the jargon in the codes in the guide. i have always been using windows so u can see why i need help alot? so i do not know how to install the gentoo 1.1a ar! help plz! anyway to help me is appreciate!

I feel your pain:) However, Gentoo is currently not really tailored for "Newbie" use. Many people will probably disagree with me, but what I would do in your case is get a very simple to install distro such as Mandrake 8.2 (www.linux-mandrake.com - available for free) and spend a few months with it until you learn the basics of linux system administration and functionality. After you feel comfortable with Mandrake, you're ready to move on to Gentoo.

2) Did you understand parts 1 and 2 of the Installation Instructions? Do you know how to burn a CD from a CD image?

well mandrake arent realli free u have to become a member for there club to let u download and i dun have a credit card...so
i think i probably continue on with gentoo..

yeah i burnt the image onto the cd already
and i also understand part 1 and 2 already
though i do not understand what the things inside the requirement meant...

Hi, I'm static - you might remember me as a moderator from such forums as Mandrakeuser or the Linux Help Forum. I just wanted to clear up some stuff. Mandrake is certainly free, just hit the second link on that download/"please join the club" page (I'll post it here) called send me to the download page now. Mandrake is a great place to start, and 8.2 has a lot of really cool GUI configs and control center, etc. EASY. The install is beautiful, best I've seen. Get dsl working right away and get updates while the install goes (the whole things' engineered for ease of use, but includes everything a power user would want, except true speed, which is where gentoo comes in

)

Between the tutorial I'm almost finished writing which covers near EVERYTHING a newbie needs, from partitioning to command line and vi, to installing apps (and which forl inux are the equivalent of all the basic windows versions, like qtella for downloading files) and if you use mandrake for 2 months, you're ready enough with linux to use gentoo.

Otherwise, I don't too much about gentoo, but I do know some linux stuff - and I'm here to help too. I can translate stuff these brains say to you into newbie talk, which you will need some of

If you really want to skip mandrake, good luck. I'm struggling with little things still, and I can't even imagine being in your case. I find you the bravest of the brave, my friend :lol:

hey when ya finish the writing the tutorial for newbies on linux can ya send it to me or something? coz it would be a great help to me if i have one of those! hehheh
i appreciate ur help hehehe...
but i dun have broadband i onli have a 56 k modem and i find downloading the iso of mandrake too much is there any other smaller ways to download it?

How in God's name are you going to install Gentoo with a 56K modem???
Not just the time, but also setting up your modem to work before installing the system!?!??

Yeah, my vote here is for you to try RedHat. It's got a snappy graphic installer a la framebuffer, and is pretty point and shoot. Far be it from me to discourage anyone from running linux of any sort, but I've been using RedHat for years, and Gentoo has had me scratching my head more than once over the last 5 days.

I highly recommend Gentoo once your sure of yourself, but to begin with, I'd recommend RedHat.

Mandrake is pretty snappy for the new user, as is Suse (from what my friends say), but I cut my teeth on the RedHat!

But mandrake always has better custom kernel patches, newer stuff (like KDE 2.x.x & XFree86 was 4.20 vs. Red Hat's 4.10 - and they came out within a week of each other)
Other than little things, you don't see a difference between the two if you run the same desktop manager. Mandrake has great GUI control center...

the model of is InModem 56

I think perhaps Anima meant on a windows machine. I think you should do as others have suggested and take a look at Mandrake or RedHat for your fist taste of Linux, they are sure to leave you feeling that Linux isn't too hard to use, but if you continue to install gentoo then I wish you good luck

btw your modem is an internal 56k V.90 modem.. not sure if it works under linux (others seem to think it will

.. but even if it does it will most likely be a pain in the arse to configure..

better off getting a 56k external, and better still get cable if you want to use gentoo

For mandrake - go for 8.2!

I'm using the new red hat beta now, it's good, but it is just a beta. mandrake 8.2 is way better than red hat 7.2, but if you're willing to wait a little (like a month) for this new red hat to be released it will be better than the mandrake 8.2 (see? No war! Just facts) The only thing is, the mandrake installer is *still* a lot better
