bash-2.05b# emerge -Dup world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies -!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to anebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libintl-0)
bash-2.05b#

i get the same message for emerge system also.

emerge gentoo-sources after portage update gave this following

sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.31-r1 merged.

does this mean new kernel is installed or i have to do manually?

how i can ask potage to look for 2..6 kernel?

my base system is :

i have installed from 2004.3 stage3 cd and kde from package cd.

how to overcome the Cannot resolve a virtual package name to anebuild.?

:) :)

Gosh! That is ancient. I would advice to get a more up to date cd and go with another profile, like 2005.1 or even 2006.0.

I think there use to be a 2004.3->2005 migration howto but I couldn't find it with a quick search. A reinstall may be the best option. Just download the latest portage snapshot and stage3 for your architecture and extract them to a partion and follow the alternative installation guide starting at section 6, installing from an existing linux distribution.

In case anyone isn't aware of it: This page really is nice when you have troubles finding any Gentoo docs.

The Gentoo Upgrading Guide and The complete Gentoo Linux 2.6 migration guide should help you to update your box without reinstall!

Or you can sell it to a museum :)

No, really, you need to make updates more often ;)

From his post I infer that this is new install using an old CD.

thanks for all answers
yes this is the first install of gentoo with an old cd
i was not able to make it work untill now
about an yr or so i tried but could not understand the tricks of installing untill 2 3 weeks.
after i got kicked here by veterans in this forum i really put some effort to learn linux commands and understand what to do and how. of course from help from this forum and the install guide.
it took 20 reinstalls to make this work
my net connection is slow so install from stage 3 from gentoo.org will take lot of time like 15 hrs.
in my place the power failure is common and net connection also stops every often.
thats why the upgrade try
emerge --sync takes abt 3 hrs. only to find that it complains tree is broken?
is there really no upgrade possible.
2004 is not very long ago.

:D :D :D :D

In that case... I know that it will hurt, but I would reccomend you some other distro. IMHO a fast and reliable internet connection is a must-have for gentoo. Perhaps some binary distro would serve you better.....

Anyway, good luck ;)

today i have bought a cd 2005.1 gentoo installer and package cd set
emerge source took 2 hrs to get the 2.6.12 kernel source and emerged.
i will come back here after i install this cd set.
although i did not know why it got it downloaded while the kernel source is there in the distfiles!!
let me see what happens
i am not upgrading gentoo everyday
i can wait the time it makes any upgrade some times.
also selection of mirrors matters.
after install what happens to the mirrorselect command ?
its not available anymore after emerge system. thats what i noticed in the earlier installation.
i will try and install kde 3.5
:D :D

To use mirrorselect, you have to emerge the package app-portage/mirrorselect :) The CD image includes that program when you boot off of it, but you have to install it yourself after you have set up your own installation.

yes same kernel 2.6.12
then i knew the cause
i had set up mirrorselect for sync and packages.
then i rut a # infront of that line
then it extracted the cd file
even while extracting kde from package cd strangely it said kdebase is got illegal and started getting packages from asia gentoo mirror and installed kdebase.3.4.
how cd can have illegal pack
while booting in one line 3C59X loading
next it says 3C59x not loaded.
anyway net connection works.

p4 2.4ghz comp is so slow?
it took 1 1/2 hr juat to compile kdebase -3.4,--
whay it takes so much time for just compiling.
even the download of 28mb file took 40 minutes only.
the processor fan was going crazy while compiling the file.
strange .
i will finish the kde install and comeback here.
:D :D

Just compiling? Don't know if anything takes more time and CPU usage :)

Compiling is a process that will take a lot of time, so waiting a few hours (depending on system speed and all that) for some big packages to get compiled is quite normal...

I think that compiling my system from scratch took about a day or so, perhaps longer. Can't remember exactly. It was a while ago :)

But if every kde package compiles for several hours.... it is way too long.

Could you post your emerge info?

what exactly u want about the emerge?
.config?
make.conf?
i was emerging kdebase
but it doesnot want to install from cd

export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom"
emerge --usepkg kdebase

i again did another install in adiffrnt partition using stage3-pentium-2005.1.tar.bz2

this also does exactly same.

i am afraid my processor will pack off with the fan speed .
why i am not able to install from package cd
i have not changed the portage.
some advice on how to make it install from cd. it downloads exactly the same files as in cd!!
i tried copying the packages to distfiles folder
it gives 2 hoots to it
it still wants download only.
help help.

As far as I understand, the whole of KDE takes one to two hours. Which seems quite alright to me.

lol you think KDE is long? compile openoffice. if you think compiling takes to long. you really should switch to a binary distro. because half the idea of gentoo is that it is compiled from source.

Precompiled packages go in /usr/portage/packages , and "emerge --usepkg" is how you install them.

Source code goes in /usr/portage/distfiles , and this stuff is what takes a long time to compile.

i dont see a /usr/portage/packages
do we create one?
as this m/c is compiling endlessly
i emerged a lynx browser for this purpose of seeng a reply to emerge info.
in the emerge info it says PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages"
do we manually make that folder?
export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom" did not work
emerge --usepkgonly xxxx also
wants to download only
anyway now the kde is almost in the finishing stage of compiling
finishing stage of compiling.
all night i left it on for doing
emerge kdebase

As far as I understood this, every single package took that much time.

Could you please arbitrate us? :) Emerging whole kde in 2 hours would be a very good time, emerging one package in the same time would be awful. Huge difference I hope ;)

What version of Portage are you running? I got that --update error when I was using an older version, so I think you need to upgrade it now. You may want to do a manual sync first so that you can do that due to --sync errors that you mentioned.
