|
|
Hi all,
I think I broke my gentoo box.
I did a emerge -c system and the same for world. That worked fine.
Then continued with a emerge -u system. That also worked fine.
And last, I tried to do a emerge -u world and it worked fine until
the last steps of the qt compile where my comp suddenly reboots.
And now kdm refuses to start. X does work though so my guess
is that qt now is broken.
The problem is that the qt compile always reboots the computer.
Could it be overheating?
Is there something else I can do?
Thanks for reading. _________________ mikke |

Ofcourse it can be overheating (check system monitor if you have one), but have you had problems before / is it hotter outside? You compiled gentoo before so why should it be different now? It can also be some hardware glitch. But why always during QT compile? Have you used any optimisations flags to compile important packages? 'm difficult is it always in the same place or does it differ?

I haven't had any problems before. But is is hotter here now...the summer is early this year.
I have no idea why it's not working now. The only thing that could make sense is the overheating factor. The qt compile takes a really long time on my machine. We are talking at least 30min. And the reboot always occur in the end of the compilation. I'll babysit it tonight and see exactly where it reboots.
I haven't changed any flags from my gentoo installation.
But I do remember having problems compiling kde in my gentoo install.
I had to manually create a .qt directory in my root directory. Otherwise the qt compile would fail. But now the whole computer seems to crash.

Well can't be that extremly hot in sweden can it?. Well at night temperature is bound to be lower, try opening you box ( remove covers ). I noticed a enormous decrease in heat by removing both side covers. But before I didn't have any problem with temperature, but well I have 3 case fans / pasted cpu with good heatsink + fan. And living in holland so temperatures aren't normally above 20 degrees, well it was higher a bit back and I did notice some increase in temp, but not that drastic to crash comp. (Compiling drastically increase temperature though.)

Oh, it sure can!
We have had around 25-30 degrees since the middle of may. Even more than that occasionally.
I have some spare fans I can put in there also. I'll update this thread tonight. Hopefully from my gentoo box.
Edit: at because I live in the northern part of Sweden the sun shines all night long... so it isn't really colder at night. _________________ mikke |

Yeah mid-summer we sometimes get a few days with heat > 30degrees, maybe its because of global heating . Hope it works, will read about it in the morning.

Here's a good webpage for the weather here in Skellefteå:

But it doesn't rain eventhough it looks like it...
(it's hot though!) _________________ mikke |

Ok, now my machine compiles alright.
It was my graphics card that overheated apparently. I now have an extra fan blowing right at it... (this adds a lot of noise but what can you do )
But my kdm still seems to be broken, X works though, via the startx command. I seem to recall a thread about a broken kdm. I'll see if I find it again.
Thanks anyway. _________________ mikke |
