I am installing Gentoo 2004.3 on my server. I booted with the minimal live cd and downloaded the stage 3 tarball. Al works fine until now, installation of grub. When i want to emerge grub (grub-0.94-r1) i get al http 404 errors. The file its looking for (grub-0.94-splash.patch.bz2) isn;t propably anymore on the servers. The same goes for lilo which i tried after this. How to fix this?

(I'm using gentoo 2004.3 because the 2005.x releases don;t even boot the install cd. The server has a VIA C3 cpu, which i blame for the reboot after a few seconds when i boot from the 2005.x cd's. Any sollutions for this problem is even more welcome!)

Try an emerge sync first if you have a working internet connection.
btw if you need an x86 cd/stagefile. The c3 is an i586 processor as it does not fully support the i686 instruction set. That's probably why your 2005.x cd's didn't work.

Tried the emerge sync. It ended with the following error:

>>> Updating Portage cache... \!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libintl-0)

Tried emerge grub after that, gave the following error:

!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

/etc/make.profile does not exist (i'm still doing the installation). I think my portage tree is now broken(?)

I know the VIA C3 is not completely I686 compatible, but the 2005.x cd's are not only for 686 and up, are they? (i downloaded teh x86 version)

I think the 2005.1 release was compiled for i686 by mistake ... and not many people noticed.

only the 2005.1 release or the 2005.0 release also? They give the same result when trying to boot.
