Confirmed by checking the GCC Docs.
Code: |
686, pentiumpro
Intel PentiumPro CPU.
pentium2
Intel Pentium2 CPU based on PentiumPro core with MMX instruction set support.

Given that the hardware requirement is 486 or later, who should be using i386? |

So only if uname -m shows 486 or 586 use the x86 stage 3 tarball, which sets CHOST to i386-pc-linux-gnu? |

The wiki suggests that i386-pc-linux-gnu does not belong on any Gentoo system, and that i486-pc-linux-gnu probably only makes sense as a cross-compiled target.
This leaves only a few i586s, installing the x86 tarball, which sets CHOST to i386-pc-linux-gnu.
One might pick the x86 tarball thinking it was intended to run on any x86 box and therefore a good choice. |

I think you can get away with a i386, i686 or a x86 with variance in performance. I think i686 would give the best performance but i386 would be the safest. _________________ If you get your problem solved put a [SOLVED] in the title!
