|
|
Hello,
My computer was a Pentium III 500Mhz. Today, I have bought and installed an AMD Sempron 2800+ 64bit on a new motherboard ASUS K8V SE. My current installation of Gentoo seems to work fine. I have recompiled the kernel to enable all modules I need now.
I was on a 32bit computer with a 32 bit Gentoo system. Now I am on a AMD 64bit computer with the same 32 bit Gentoo system. I would like to use the 64 bit abilities of my new processor. I have modified the make.conf file with:
Code: | CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" |
and modified the file /etc/portage/package.keywords by replacing all ~x86 by ~amd64. Then I should reemerge all the package, but I will make this later. Is it sufficient to have a 64 bit Gentoo system? I have read in the forum that there is another 64 bit version of Gentoo: should I reinstall all the Gentoo with this version?
Bye. _________________ AMD Sempron 2800+ 64bit, 512 Mo RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 (64Mo), Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value, 32-bit installation.

Hi,
I've raised this before in the 64 bit section and so have others. Most seem to advise a fresh install. One chap did manage a migrate from 32 to 64 bit but I've never been able to find his post again. I'd hoped I could do the same to move one of my servers from 32 to 64 bit. Instead it still runs 32 bit on 64 bit hardware.
Try sticking the post in the 64 bit section in case someone can point you to the post I saw. |

Yes you're right. I have not seen all docs of Gentoo about AMD64, nore the section for AMD64 in forum. In this page:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-amd64-faq.xml#upgradex86
it is said that upgrading from ~x86 to ~amd64 is impossible and that I have to reinstall all the system. So I stay to x86 32 bit for the moment. Just one thing: my processor is a Sempron 64 bit. So what march should I use to stay in 32 bit? athlon-xp?or k6-3? or pentium?
Thanks. _________________ AMD Sempron 2800+ 64bit, 512 Mo RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 (64Mo), Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value, 32-bit installation.

I tell my 32 bit Xeon machine that it's a Pentium 4. I'd say you should use the nearest to your Sempron. This may help http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags
Cat /proc/cpuinfo to see what your CPU supports and then work from there with a search or two. |
