|

Hi,
I'm running a Gentoo server for FTP and sshd. Any FTP client and Putty require a long time to connect to the server (about 10 seconds) from a remote computer. This means Putty requires about 10 seconds before a window appears for logging in. The FTP client seems to take that amount of time, before it gets it's welcome message. Once it is connected it runs pretty fast, so there is no problem with that. Running "ftp localhost" and terminal at the server is also no problem and works instantly. Does anyone know how to solve this "10 seconds of waiting" problem? |

90% of the time this will be caused by a name resolution problem. Make sure your server is able to resolve the name of the computer connecting to it. When you connect via FTP or SSH, the server will try to do a reverse lookup to get the name of your client machine. If it can't find it, it will have to wait untill it as timed out to continue.
If you can't configure nameresolution properly, I sujest disabling the check in SSH and your ftp server. Look in the configuration files for the option that does that. _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |

Hi,
I tried to do this for FTP:
proftpd.conf --> UseReverseDNS off
I don't know if this is what you mean, but it has absolutely no effect whatsoever.
How can I configure nameresolution in Gentoo properly? |

make sure your name server is there in resolve.conf
If you ping the name of your client and it can't resolve it, then you have found the issue. If it does so and does it very fast, the issue might be somewhere else. _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |

Ok.. A friend of mine found out what the problem was. It seems there is something wrong with my client (laptop). Other clients seem to connect just fine and fast. I did not test this before, because I assumed something was wrong with the server. And.. assumption is the mother of all f*ck ups
Sorry for the trouble, but thanx for the help! |
