dhcpcd seemed to kill itself yesterday for absolutlely no reason. My Network was working fine and as I was chating away with one of my friends it dropped connection, this usually never happens but I figured maybe it was a latency problem on the end of the isp in renewing my address lease. So I tried to reconnect.... nothing. I went to another computer and the internet worked fine. Went back to my computer and did /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart and it failed and said that no dhcp client was installed so I typed dhcpcd and it came up and restarted net.eth0 still same error. The last change I had made to my system was that I emerged php (and this was 3 prior to the problem) so I figured that it may have some how messed up dhcpcd so decided I should just unmerge dhcpcd and boot to the live cd chroot and emerge the newest version as I've never had any difficulty with getting on the net with the livecd. So i boot to the livecd and before chrooting just to test if my internet connection was working I pinged yahoo "unknownhost" ifconfig only shows lo. Now I used this same livecd to install gentoo on my machine and it recognised the network card then but not now what could cause this and any suggestions on how to fix this problem cus I am stumped.

your nic might have went out. can you switch it out and test it or do you perhaps have another os installed on that machine?

I don't have any other os currently installed on my machine but I have an extra hd in there just incase. I also have 2 nics in the box (back from when I used to run it as a router) so I'll also try to use my other nic.

hmm three possible causes come to mind

1) broken cable
2) broken NIC (PC side)
3) broken NIC/Port (ISP side)

ok, so I switched the nic and it worked from the livecd I then chrooted and emerged dhcpcd now lo is totally broken.
:( this may have something to the fact that I cp /etc/init.d/net.eth1 from the live cd to the one on my box but I'm not entirely sure of this. Any suggestions? I'm not real sure whats going on here. Thinking about cp lo from livecd to box to see fi that fixs it. I appreciate everyones help so far.

FIXED :)
what I did to fix it was booted to the livecd where I had connectivity and chrooted and emerged basesystem and it fixed it. :)
