Hey,

I have a laptop that was working great until a few weeks ago at which time it would occastionally stop responding every few seconds. I found that if I unload my network module (tg3) from the kernel then it fixed the problem. I tried upgrading to a new kernel, but that did not fix the problem. I don't remember making any changes to the system that would affect this in any way. Here is the output from a dmesg:

Code:

I still do have the problem. I don't use the wired ethernet port often so I haven't really tried to fix it.

What kernel are u using? There were some big changes in last kernels in the tg3 code I think...

you say you been having problems with your network card if so can you lead me or any one reading this post in the right direction of uncovering this one soft lock up detected on CPU 0 I am currently using the install-amd64 universal 2006.0 cd(live cd). Ask me one thing does this look like a glitch where gentoo is able to recognise my NIC which is a Rhine II fast ethernet adapter Linksys WAG54G Wireless router/ADSL modem/4 port ethernet and my Alcetel Adsl Speeedtouch Modem but somewhere in between i am getting this softlock up just before my
install-amd64 universal 2006.0 cd(live cd). starts loading up

I dont get it if i use the gentoo nofb or if i turn off certain devices using the F2 command as i am only testing my system with the plan of trying to get gentoo on my computer i am baffeled/curious if any more people have been affected by this soft lock up scenario is it a bug is there an in compality issue with certain network cards devices running under linux i only joined the forums yesterday so i am keen to hear on what actually causes ths soft lock up i
