came across this today, http://spuriousinterrupt.org/files/xfce4/trans-inactive.c, and it turns out to be just what ive been looking for. Basically, it runs in the background, and sets the active window to be opaque, while any inactive windows are set to be translucent. Its written for the xfce desktop, but i've managed to get it running just fine in gnome by switching over to the xfwm4 window manager within gnome 2.12. So now i've got real transparency running in gnome that adjusts in real time as windows are selected. I feel like i've seen a number of posts looking for something similar so I thought i'd alert everyone to this. |

Sweet! I've also wanted something like this. I think that is the most effective use for transparency. _________________ --Aaron |

as far as i can tell, you need to be running xfwm4 as your window manager as the script takes advantage of its built in composite manager |
