Success here with a Pentium III 750Mhz, Nvidia Geforce2 MX, latest NVIDIA-kernel & GLX, using Rockhopper Gentoo (gcc-4.1beta) ... Thanks for the guy who discovered the "eselect opengl ..." stuff! Working like charm.
Let's hope for more advance in near future 8)

is not just the "eselect opengl ..." stuff as you said, the development and advantages of compiz and xgl CVS' did the trick too.

same thing here. it seems the wobble effect stops, when there is no need for the xserver to refresh the window. in my case it is even stopping, when i release the mousebutton and it only continues when the window content is changing or another window needs rendering a wobble effect.

Shouldn't be a problem with pixel shading on my GeForce FX 5700.

Same issue on my 7800GT, I don't think a lack of pixel shaders is the issue :-)

i found a patch to the compiz wobbly.c to fix the rendering interruption:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-February/013042.html

it works for me, but is stated as a very hacky way to solve the issue.

Fantastig HOWTO's and guides...I actually got compiz/xgl working rather quick surprisingly enough. :)

One thing however, I get tearing on video, and while that was easily fixed before using nvidia-settings and setting gl vblank or vsync to enabled. But nvidia-settings is no longer working. I get a ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display. Even though there are no errors in my xorg log, and in fact it mentions that it's loading the extention with no WW's or EE's.

I searched around, but couldn't really find anyone else mentioning they were having this problem, so I figured it was something I did wrong.

As an FYI I'm running a GeForce 6200 AGP...nothing spectacular, but nothing too out of the ordinary either.

Again, sorry if this question has been answered already elsewhere...

Solution for CAIRO on GIT (no cvs anymore)

First you need the GIT stuff :

* emerge dev-util/git
* emerge dev-util/cogito

Next you need an GIT.ECLASS

* http://www.kha.uni-karlsruhe.de/tmp/git.eclass
* copy it to /usr/portage/eclass/
* (it will be lost on portage sync)

Next you need an updated CAIRO ebuild (this oringal one was from hboeck.de, svn revision 14)

* http://www.kha.uni-karlsruhe.de/tmp/cairo-1.1.1_alpha20060216.ebuild
* copy it to your overlay where the cairo ebuild resides (overwrite the old one)
* ebuild cairo-1.1.1_alpha20060216.ebuild digest (create the digest)

Now your done

emerge -u cairo should work again.

btw portage will use eclasses located in overlays, so if one of your overlays is /usr/local/portage, you can create an eclass subdirectory and save any local eclasses, e.g. git.eclass in, e.g. /usr/local/portage/eclass/, and you won't lose the eclass on the next sync.

compiz needs +gnome to build the gnome-window-decorator. i would like to tuck as many of these gnome deps into package.provided as i can get away with. Anyone happen to know that are the minimum required gnome packages are?

control center is all that is needed. emerge control-center, have compiz +gnome in package.use. get gconf if you need it. emerge compiz using --nodeps if it tries to pull in all that junk

Help Mesa 6.4.3_alpha20060216 says I have a i810 graphics card when I really have a nvidia 6200. How do I change that? Right now it gives a compile error (which I'm guessing is a i810 issue because of the last directory in the error):

Also Kopete crashes Xorg a lot. Has anyone else noticed this and is there a fix? dmesg logged these 3 errors all from kopete (I think):
Code:
X[7922]: segfault at 00002aaaac278678 rip 00002aaaabfab6e0 rsp 00007fffffff0170 error 4
X[9422]: segfault at 00002aaaac2b5a5c rip 00002aaaabfab6e0 rsp 00007fffffe4e4a0 error 4

X[21825]: segfault at 00002aaaac331ac4 rip 00002aaaabfab6e0 rsp 00007fffffd07850 error 4

EDIT: kopete usually crashes when I click the tray icon, someone IMs me for the first time and I click accept, or when I click someones name to bring up the IM window for them.

Help Mesa 6.4.3_alpha20060216 says I have a i810 graphics card when I really have a nvidia 6200. How do I change that? Right now it gives a compile error (which I'm guessing is a i810 issue because of the last directory in the error):
---SNIP----

add VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" in your /etc/make.conf ... there isn't one but mesa will then build with no default video_card so that you can emerge nvidia-kernel & nvidia-glx as stated in the HOWTO_Xgl.

BTW ...

I just got it working with all effect working as they are descibed ... note I used the HOWTO_Xgl with today's cvs of everything.

P4 Celeron 2.6ghz 1g 2100 ddr nvidia geforcefx 5200 256m ddr

Neat ... Cool ... Drool .. OOh Aah ... Now make it stable so I can use it AAAAND do other stuff. :)

Still doesn't work.
Code:
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/mesa-6.4.3_alpha20060216 [6.4.2-r1] USE="motif -debug" VIDEO_CARDS="i810 -ati -mga -none -s3virge -savage -sis -tdfx -trident -via" 0 kB [2]

Don't forget -i810 in your VIDEO_CARDS or USE list. Just a thought. It's probably there somewhere to be turned off.

Hmmm am baffled, When I try and run the command
Code:
 Xgl -ac -accel glx:fb0 -accel
or some variant of this I always get the following error appearing in Xorg.log
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.93.log | grep glx
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(EE) LoadModule: Module glx does not have a glxModuleData data object.
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (invalid module, 0)

Anyone have any ideas???

I unmerged xorg-x11 so I could hopefully recompile it and it might fix the Video card issues. But instead of doing that it requires me to emerge the vesa and i810 drivers, both of which don't compile. If anyone has any ideas or diagnostic procedures please IM me or reply. I am in need of assistance. :roll:

EDIT: I figured it out! And I made myself feel stupid :roll: Somehow the use flags "video_cards_vesa" and "video_cards_i810" got set so I just unset them.
