|

After years of dialup I am about to sign up for wireless broadband with Clearwire. They have a modem that attaches to the computer with an ethernet cable, to my nic I assume. The problem is they can't tell me how to set up Linux to connect. I've never used anything except dialup and I don't have a clue how to do it. Has anyone here used Clearwire or a similar service? Does anyone have any advice for me? _________________ I can resist everything except temptation.

I have never used it, so this is purely speculation.
I bet that if it hooks up via ethernet, it must act as a simple router device, like a cable modem or DSL modem.
Having special drivers for something that connects over CAT-5 would be ... wierd. |

Do I need to configure anything to use a cable modem, or is it plug and play? I was reading the cable modem howto and it said Debian systems required a dhcp client to be running. Is that true also for my Gentoo system? While I'm asking, is there a Gentoo version of a cable modem howto? _________________ I can resist everything except temptation.

Most modern cable modems have a little gateway router and DHCP server built in.
So, all you do is plug it in and set your machine eth0 device to use dhcp. ... just like connecting to any sort of router. |

I emerged dhcp and got no errors. Do I have to start the client, or did the emerge do that? I don't have the modem yet so I don't know if my setup is working or not. Will typing start the client for me or do I need to have /etc/conf.d/net configured before the client will work? _________________ I can resist everything except temptation.

Thats a good read, but it didn't answer the question about how the client gets started. _________________ I can resist everything except temptation.

no problem.
If you get the broadband wifi to work with Gentoo, let us know! |

I got the modem last night and it works fine. The company does not "officially" support it because I'm outside their service area, but I'm getting a good signal. I configured my /etc/conf.d/net file as above. I plugged the modem into eth0 did a /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start and I was connected. I use firestarter as my firewall and it seems to be working with the new setup just fine. I have a second nic in the computer to share the connection with my daughter's computer, but I haven't got that going just yet. I have to get my DHCP server running first. _________________ I can resist everything except temptation.
