I'm completely new to gentoo, just managed to get kde running on my system, and one of the many holes is that there is no sound. I have a creative audigy 4 and 5.1 speakers, and I have yet to hear any system sounds and KsCD doesn't produce any sound either.
When I go to Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System, an error message pops up saying "Unable to start the sound server to retrieve possible sound I/O methods. Only automatic detection will be available." Any time I make a change in this window and press Apply, a small pop-up window appears saying "Restarting Sound System" and a progress bar fills up, but when it gets to 90% it goes back to 5% and starts over until I hit cancel.
A line of the lspci output says "05:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)", and at the bottom of KMix is "Audigy 4 PRO [SB0380]", so I'm fairly certain it has correctly identified my sound card, and I made sure that all of the potentially important levels in KMix were not muted.
What could be the problem? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Wassup.
Is your soundcard enabled in your kernel configuration?
Did you configure alsa?

Thanks, that alsa how-to got some things working: I can play audio CDs with amaroK and local files with amaroK and juK.
ksCD still doesn't output any sound, though, and though juK seems to put out surround sound in 5.1, amaroK, set to gstreamer and alsasink, only puts out stereo, so I have my center and two rear speakers unused. I'm not too concerned about KsCD working, as I think that amaroK is going to be my player, but I'd like to get 5.1 sound out of it.
The notification sounds in Gaim work, though I have yet to hear any KDE system sounds (and I have never heard them before - are there any, and what could I do so that a system sound should play?)
Thanks |

Remaining issues: I'm not getting any system sounds out of KDE (I've verified this now), and I'm only getting stereo out of amaroK, which is using gstreamer and alsasink (it crashes when I set it to use gconfaudiosink). Any help is greatly appreciated. |

I personally don't use kde as my main windows manager. I advice that you look around the forum. there are tons of posts about kde no giving sound.

Good luck and wellcome to gentoo. _________________ I live a life of needles and wax.

Maybe a good solution would be to compile kde with a -arts USE flag. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |
