I have a Hauppauge Win-PVR 250, which I use with ivtv and mplayer (no MythTV). It used to work beautifully, then for a while (two months?) I broke my coax cable and didn't bother to replace it until now. Now when I try to watch TV with mplayer, I get perfect picture as before, but no sound. All I could think to check was alsamixer, which is set up fine, but apart from that I'm
baffled. Here's the output I get; nothing really jumps out at me, since it claims to be connecting to the default sound device, and my computer only has one (unless one snuck in there on me!).

Any help would be appreciated. Oh, I should also mention that mplayer's sound works just fine with every other type of media, just not TV all of a sudden.

mattsienko,

I could be wrong, but I figure it is ivtv that's crapping out on you. I recently ran into problems with sound from my PVR-150 cards. I "think" I updated ivtv recently. I read of similar problems on the mythtv website from others. For me, a reboot of the computer "seemed" to restore my sound. I have now upgraded to the latest ~x86 ivtv drivers. So far no problems, but only time will tell.

Okay, so I tried rebuilding ivtv, and the emerge failed because apparently in the last couple emerge -u world's, I emerged a new kernel, and never rebooted into it! So I recompile the kernel and reboot, and upon reemerging ivtv, I get:
Code:
 *   CONFIG_VIDEO_DECODER:       is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_VIDEO_AUDIO_DECODER:         is not set when it should be.

At this moment the kernel is recompiling with those options, and we'll see if it works when I reboot and reemerge ivtv again.

Well, technically speaking, sound works now, but it's so quiet that I have to turn everything up to the maximum in order to hear anything at all, and when I do, there's so much line noise that I might as well not bother. Maybe that's what was happening before, but I didn't turn it up high enough to notice. Now I really don't know what's going on with this.

EDIT: this is now happening with all sound in mplayer, not just for /dev/v4l/video0. Why would this happen all of a sudden?

Turns out there are some new settings in alsamixer that I either never noticed before, or are in a new version: 4 VIA DSX settings that all default to zero. Interestingly, it seems that each bar, though named the same, controls something different. Movies in mplayer have sound when the second is turned up, and TV gets sound when the first one is turned up. It also resets all of them to zero when rebooted, so that was adding to my confusion earlier. Whatever, it works now.
