I have a bit of a dilema and haven't been able to find the answer on these forums, the docs, or google so I figured I'd ask here
I am putting gentoo on an AMD K6 machine and in the past I did stage1 installs and set the CHOST to i586. I see that now stage2 and stage1 are unsupported so I figured I'd try stage3 but alas there is no i586 stage3 tarball
So if I install x86 from stage3 it says I cannot alter CHOST from i386 to i586.
Is there a different stage3 tarball I should be using? (options are athlon-xp,i686,pentium3,pentium4,x86)
The only thing I can think of is to do an x86 install and just live with a 386 CHOST which seems a little strange considering the flexibility the old stage1 install had
Thanks for any help |

Hi.
I encountered the same perplex with my future Gentoo router/server (AMD K6-2, 550).
Now: if 2006.0 will include stage 3 with the i586 tarball, should I wait for it or should I just go with the i386 CHOST?
Given that performance is not going to be an such optimum for this machine, and that there is no life without a firewall and iptables, I would personally choose the i386.
Would you say that there might be some reason not to?
Thanks.
