|
|
Shuttle makes a card reader for their XPC SFF boxes called teh PC12. It claims to have Linux support and claims all you need is the basic USB Mass Storage driver to get it working. I'm finding this isn't the case... does anyone have any other experience with this.
The Device ID is Bus 001 Device 005: ID 07cc:0320 Carry Computer Eng., Co., Ltd.
I've enabled all the special cases under USB storage and can mount other USB memory sticks just not this reader. I'm running 2.6.15-suspend2-r1
dmesg gives me a whole lot of errors here they are in case they make sence to someone:

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me fix this mess or point me in the direction of an internal 6+ in 1 reader that is known to work with Linux |

Do you have HAL and dbus installed?

No are those a requirement or just useful for debugging? |

I'm not sure whether they are a requirement, but when I set up my card reader I was told to install them. I already had dbus installed, and adding HAL didn't solve my problem immediately; I don't know whether it was an important step or not.
Anyway, does anything regarding the card reader turn up in the output of the command dmesg? I've got lines such as:
Code: |
Vendor: IC Model: USB Storage-CFC Rev: 301b
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sda
sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
|
This turned up even before I could actually use the card reader.

Ok, if you have those lines you might be halfway there. I still had to do the following:
For each slot in the reader (mine is a 4 in 1) I had to add a line to /proc/scsi/scsi doing this on the command line:
Code: |
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 1" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 2" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 3" > /proc/scsi/scsi
|
Adjust the four zeroes according to the numbers in your dmesg output and increment the last one, adding as many lines as your reader supports cards. Then,
Code: |
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
|
should list the different slots. Mine for instance gives me
Code: |
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: IC Model: USB Storage-CFC Rev: 301b
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 01
Vendor: IC Model: USB Storage-SMC Rev: 301b
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 02
Vendor: IC Model: USB Storage-MMC Rev: 301b
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

CFC is Compact Flash, SMC Smart Media, MMC Multimedia Card, MSC Memory Stick. Then, in /dev/.udev/db there should be new files like block@sda, block@sdb etc. (if your dmesg output contains different letters than sd, the files will be named accordingly). In my case, sda corresponds to CFC, sdb to SMC and so on, so if I want to use a Multimedia Card I have to mount sdc1 for that. Of course you'll have to create the actual mountpoints manually first.
It's a good idea to put the echo commands in a file to use again later, as the content of /proc/scsi/scsi does not survive a reboot. I added the following script to the default runlevel:
Code: |
#!/sbin/runscript
#Init-script for the Multi-Card-Reader
start() {
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 1" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 2" > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 3" > /proc/scsi/scsi
}
|
That might be quick and dirty (I don't know whether I had better have a stop and other sequences in there) but it works. I called the script init-card-reader and put it in init.d, then added it to the default runlevel like this:
Code: |
rc-update add init-card-reader default

Turns out there were 2 problems:
There was a problem with EHCI where bad things were happening that caused the lockups. So I dropped it back to 1.1 only in the BIOS and that went away. Next...I used your echo script in local.start and everything is great now. Thanks a ton |
