I think that Novell really has given something spesial to us.

I got the same white screen problem. Can you please explain how you solve it in details? Thanks a lot.

Great work! Running near perfectly w/ an NVidia 6200 Go. I think I had one crash yesterday when I left my laptop to run to lunch. I came back to find it at the GDM login screen instead of the Gnome session where I had left it... My best guess is that an opengl screensaver came on but the logs didn't provide much detail.

One tip: if you update compiz and find that it seg faults check your plugins. Make sure that if you are using the opacity plugin that you rebuild it after rebuilding compiz (or disable it).

Yes same problem occurs with screensaver... indeed all opengl apps seems more likely to bring down X ... alpha/beta stage obliges. You can try a non-opengl scrensaver, or just no SS.

Anybody starting xgl from kdm? What file have I put in /etc/X11/Sessions? I just emerged gnome-light and I would like to start it alongside KDE on next console ALT-CTRL-F8 (you know, from kmenu) for testing purposes. Thanks.

@ x11perf

I have a Radeon card and got the same compiling error with the newest mesa. I changed my make.conf to include fglrx but not ati (maybe this is wrong I don't know which programs use this and which values may be here,) but that allowed the emerge to complete without error, and I put ati back in after. I can't say that makes everything work, since I use KDE and haven't done anything more than open a window with xgl and run applications in it without window decorations, which work ok with some apps and not others. Hopefully we can get further with KDE on this soon. Good luck.

I think you mean you get those when compiling MESA, and I'm having the same error :)
I think we should just wait for a new update of the overlay or MESA CVS :)

I fixed it by changing the patch in the glproto ebuild. Try replacing the contents of glproto-fbo-1.patch with:

Solved the compile time issue, I now ran into the white windows problem.

Anyone that solved this problem can please post his/her solution? Thanks! :)

In the meantime, I'll try coffee overlay :)

Good, this solved my mesa's radeon_mm.c compiling problems:

greasy_grasshopper wrote:
OK, I solved my problem thanks to the Gentoo Forums again!

I looked at this thread and saw a similar error (but not quite) and to my own surprise it made mesa compile!

I don't fully understand why the patch suggested fixes this problem, but for those who do understand it, is this a bug? Or a need for the CVS libdrm to get mesa working for xgl?

Anyways, since I had to dig that up, this post will be another reference in the forum's search for those who are searching the forums with the "xgl" keyword.

Well, I actually got the error while compiling xgl (have a look at the error message), mesa did compile successfully.
In meantime, I tried to emerge glproto first, but it didn't change anything.

Any ideas? Any further information needed?

I'm trying to compile xgl and compiz using the coffee overlay, and following the wiki. Currently I'm having an issue compiling xgl. I'm getting this error:

I've seen discussion of this error previously in the thread, but no solution. Is anyone else having this problem? Should I switch to the other overlay?

I finally got xgl running. Two problems are left:

  • Xgl (or probably compiz) won't start with my ati dual-screen setup, I have to revert to single-screen. I have seen a video on the net wher someone uses Xgl with nvidia TwinView...
  • The screen sometimes just turns black after a while. If I remember past posts here correctly this is a driver issue, right?

Is anyone successfully running Xgl in a dual-screen setup?

On the "visual format" error:

After remerging nvidia-glx didn't solve my problem (although I knew my card supports XGL (The Kororaa live CD is great, btw!)), I checked my xorg.conf and .log found out I wasn't using the right color depth. So everyone who still encounters this problem should make sure DefaultColorDepth is set to 16 or 24 and the Display section is correct.

Chi,
Stefan
