i am sorry about the link not being correct earlier. I have corrected the link now in the 1st post. That image shows the error about smtp server refusing connection. _________________ Pdict - dockable dictionary client for linux

Does the SMTP server require login credentials? Can you look into the mail.error file (assuming Gentoo server) and provide the error generated by the SMTP server when you try to send. Sometimes it is also a reverse DNS issue. Sendmail in particular will not accept an smtp message from a machine for which it cannot resolve a name. |

i can't check the smtp server logs. But what u said about the server not being able to resolve the name seems a possibility. When i login to my own computer using ftp (ncftpd server running) and when i check the login using the who tool of ncftpd i get my machinename.domainname that i have set instead of the ip. Since this entry is not there on the dns of the network it cannot be reversed to get the ip.
i think this might be happening on the smtp server also. How can i correct this?? I don't want to remove the domanname part 'cauz ncftpd needs it to have user limit of 5. (i prefer not changing ncftpd).
thanks

The easiest way to solve it is to have all your machines listed in the reverse DNS zones. As long as sendmail can do a host lookup and match the IP to a name it will be happy. |

You are going to have to describe the environment you are in if you want more help with this.
How is DNS setup? Are you allowed to have this machine on the network? Who manages the SMTP server, your ISP, your company?
What is your network topology? Firewalls anywhere? And so on... |

Why not telnet to port 25 on mail server and send the message 'by hand'. At least you are likely to get some info regarding where and why it fails. |

I am having the exact same problem. With mutliple smtp servers that work fine with other clients. I know because one of the servers I helped set up. I believe that this is definitly a thunderbird problem. I have tried re-creating my smtp server settings, and occasionally it will work for one or two e-mails before it fails again. I was hoping to find a solution other than "Its a server error". _________________ while(realavant){
