Okay, I'm not sure on this--another problem caused by my WRT54g running linux talking to my gentoo server!

In this case, I was using udhcp on the WRT54g, and my domain name was "wingedyak.com" for fun. I didn't need to fully qualify lookups, ie "ping phineas" from my server would get me the right address.

Now that I'm using dnsmasq on the WRT54g, I need to fully qualify the domain name ("ping phineas" gets me a lookup error, but "ping phineas.wingedyak.com" works like a champ).

How can I either:

(gentoo question) have my gentoo server automatically add wingedyak.com to unqualified lookups, or better
(dnsmasq question) have dnsmasq assume unqualified lookups are in the wingedyak.com domain?

Thanks; been bamboozled about this.

IIRC, dnsmasq reads the localhost /etc/hosts and answers queries not found there by trying to resolve them against a DNS declared in /etc/resolv.conf.

Adding both phineas and phineas.wingedyak.com to /etc/hosts would assure the resolv would be succesfull no matter which one you choose to use.

Checkout the expand-hosts dnsmasq option.

Great! Exactly what I was looking for. But for some reason it's not working when I add that to the router's dnsmasq.conf file--my PXE options didn't do anything either. But that's not a Gentoo problem; I'll try to hash it out with the DD-WRT people. Thanks for the pointer.
