Hey guys, im in the progress of building a server and i have some questions.

1) Its a P1 200 MMX (Oh yeah... feel that speed :twisted:) so what tarball do i need (x86, i686 ect) ?
2) Can i use my existing instalation (AMD64 ect) and make a chroot without dloading the stage3 tarball and use my latest packages and distcc ect ?
3) Its got mandrake 10 Official on it atm. So can i do something with that like install portage, clean the system and turn it into gentoo!?

Keeping in mind im on 31.2k dialup and i kinda have bandwith issues! :x.

Cheers, Mike

i don't know about 1, but...

2) pretty sure the answer is no to that one. your best bet would be to download the stage 3 and package cds from someplace else or that is what i would suggest.

3) i have seen people discuss this in the forums before, and while people hve added portage to other distro's, it is not a undertaking for the faint of heart.

The naming scheme for Intel's CPUs is:

x86 = everything greater 8086 (also I don't know if the x86 tarball would really run on these)

i586 = Pentium I, Pentium I MMX
i686 = Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium M
i786 = Pentium IV

2) Can i use my existing instalation (AMD64 ect) and make a chroot without dloading the stage3 tarball and use my latest packages and distcc ect ?
You optimized your existing installation for a very modern 64Bit processor. Your P1 is quite an old 32Bit processor.
The common cause for using Gentoo is that modern processors have more/faster commands than ancient models.
I think this answers your question.

I wouldn't try. But you don't need to reformat your HD, so keep /home (and /root) and delete everything else and your data won't be lost.

I would reccomend that you put one of the BSD's on it, Seeing how aged the hardware is it should make a good canidate. And you will have alot less compiling to do.

If you insist on gentoo I would use the i686 tarball.

And if you can find it, I'd recommend that i786 or higher (i886/i986) :) :D :P :wink:
