|
|
I have recently upgraded my video card to an eVGA 6800GS, and the nvidia drivers seem to work for the most part, but sometimes my system freezes on boot.
I will boot the system, the init process completes and I see *setting up gdm... last, then the screen switches over as X starts, and usually I see the nvidia logo and then the gdm login screen. At this point, the system is stable and I have no nvidia related problems. Sometimes though, when the init process has completed and the X server is starting, the system locks up and my monitor LED turns yellow as if there is no video signal. I can't get any response from the system and have to reset the power. I will try booting again, and usually it works, but one time I had to reset it 3 times before it booted up normally.
At first I thought maybe the Dell power supply can't hanlde the card, which uses 2 external connectors, but gaming under Windows is rock solid (well, as solid as anything Windows can be...) and I can overclock my card significantly without any instability issues that would come from overheating or undervolting. I can only see a problem between my setup and the nvidia drivers as the cause, since I have no problems with the Xorg "nv" driver. I only get this weird boot problem using the nvidia drivers.
Any ideas how to fix this? I am currently using the stable amd64 versions:
Code: |
[ebuild R ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r5 0 kB
[ebuild R ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6 0 kB
|
But I am upgrading to the ~amd64 versions now to see if they make any difference without causing me more bugs...
Code: |
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3 [1.0.6629-r5] 9,336 kB
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8178 [1.0.6629-r6] -dlloader 0 kB
