I'm pretty much set on buying this system. I just wanted to get some info on what works and what doesn't work. Here are the specs from the site.

Processor AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-40 (2.2GHz/1MB L2 Cache)

Display FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen!!

Graphics Card 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)

Memory 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (1x1024MB)

Hard Drive 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive

Primary CD/DVD Drive LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer

Networking 54g(TM) 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth

The website really doesn't get into much detail about the hardware but you get the idea.

I have an HP zv5000 and have been using it for some time with Gentoo. The main points to make are:

  • I have an NVidia gfx chip and use those drivers instead of your ATI (but those should work fine), and
  • I have to use 'ndiswrapper' to get the wireless LAN to work, but work it does (along with wpa_supplicant)!

I don't think you'll run into any issues with Gentoo at all!

Best of luck with your new system!

Thanks Janax

I'm pretty certain the install will be a breeze. But I'm still wondering about the wifi card/bluetooth combo. I know I can get wifi working by ndiswrapper but if BT and wifi are the same card then that might cause a problem.

I had to find a modeline to get native resolution, and you will need the newest ati drivers with a recent kernel to get DRI. I can't remember what I did on the wireless, but it is working. Also can't comment on the bluetooth since she skipped it.

It's a whole lot cheaper to buy ram from newegg or the likes. You can get 2 GB for what they're charging for the 1GB stick.

Cool. Yeah I plan on getting ram from someone else. Compaq/HP is out of their mind.

I couldn't get a good fb res. It runs 1024x768 stretched. I'll have to pry it out of her(my wife) hands, or wait until she's asleep(she sleeps way less than I do) to try and get a look.
