Everytime, some program uses the arts sound system, my soundserver crashes with a segmentation fault. I have tried to reemerge kde several times, but no avail. XMMS and mplayer have no trouble playing sounds - but a lot of KDE programs have.
Here is the Trace:

This has just started happening to me too.
I emerge -puD && revdep-rebuild once a week and today was the day.
Before the emerge my sound was perfect and there were no sigsegvs after the emerge they pop up every few seconds. In the short term I have disabled audio.
Only four programs were grabbed:
baselayout-1.12.0_pre16 (1.12.0_pre15-r1)
bash-3.1_p8 (3.0-r12)
usbutils-0.71-r1 (0.11-r5)
gnupg-1.4.2.1 (1.4.2-r3)
If it is a problem with these programs I think we can rule out gnupg
Looking at the output KDE creates there are alot of references to artsd not being able to read /tmp/ksocket-userXXXX (My tmp is noexec, nodev, noatime)
With my limited experience I can't decide if it's bash, usbutils or baselayout. I might revert those programs and see what happens.
Edit: Hmmm baselayout pre15-r1 has gone from portage. pre13-r1 is the prior version so I'll try that
Damn. baselayout-1.12.0_pre13-r1 now requires >=bash-3.1_p7 I'll have to fall right back to 1.11.14-r5
Code: | [ebuild UD] app-shells/bash-3.0-r12 [3.1_p8] -bashlogger -build +nls 0 kB
[ebuild UD] sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.14-r5 [1.12.0_pre16] -bootstrap -build -static +unicode 155 kB
[ebuild UD] sys-apps/usbutils-0.11-r5 [0.71-r1] 0 kB
[ebuild N ] kde-base/arts-3.5.1 +alsa +arts -artswrappersuid -debug +esd +jack -kdeenablefinal +mp3 +nas +vorbis +xinerama 0 kB |
No, unfortunately that didn't work. I'm open to suggestions as to what I can try.
startx throws up two errors. Code: | kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so: undefined symbol: init_kdnssd | happens once and Code: | AudioSubSystem::emergencyCleanup

Launched ok, pid = 1952
There are already artsd objects registered, looking if they are active...
... cleaned 5 unused mcop global references. | happens every time the sigsegv happens. _________________ 2.6.18-gentoo-r1 x86
