Dont seems like im going to get my ati-drivers:
Code:

Detected version of X does not have a matching 'x700' directory
You may override the detected version using the following syntax:

The following values may be used for <xdir>:

    x420        XFree86 4.2.x
    x430        XFree86 4.3.x
    x680        X.Org 6.8.x
    x690        X.Org 6.9.x
Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install

I should try some older drivers now... :(

I might be wrong about this, but i think X11R7 is the same as what ATI are calling 'X.Org 6.9.x', it's just that version-6.9 is the whole thing, while 7.0 is modular... :?

My guess would be that you've emerged 'ati-drivers' against a differently-configured source-tree, & the module isn't where your current kernel is looking for it.

I'd suggest re-emerging 'ati-drivers' after first making certain that the kernel source-tree matches the kernel you're using, & that the /usr/src/linux symlink points to it correctly.

Okey, I re-emerged 'ati-drivers'. I made sure that /usr/scr/linux points to the kernel I'm using now. But still fglrx is not loading.

Code:

$ ls /lib/modules/2.6.15-gentoo-r5/video/
fglrx.ko
$ cat /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
agpgart
nvidia_agp
fglrx

It is like you say. I hav tried the X_VERSION=x690 option too. I'm trying all the ways i have encountered

I'm using xorg 6.8, and I've got my Radeon 9600 Pro set up and working with hardware acceleration and framebuffer/splash. However, I've been experiencing a similar problem to one of the previous posters - Every time I log out of Gnome, CTRL-ALT-BKSP, and so on, I'm greeted with a blank screen, no resolution switch, nothing. I'm able to hit the numlock key, and it lights up, indicating it's not locked. The video's just gone. CTRL-ALT-Fn works just fine while in X, but once X is supposed to go down for any reason, it completely blanks the screen.

It didn't happen with the "radeon" driver, and seems to only affect X when HW-accel is working. I've got my AGPgart set up as a module, and after going over it numerous times, I can't see any glaring errors in my xorg.conf file.

Has anyone troubleshot anything like this before? Google searches reveal pretty much nothing.

Hmmm.... I'm sick with this ATI :(

When I try (after re-emeging xorg-x11 and ati-drivers) modprobe fglrx I get

Code:

FATAL: Module fglrx not found

:/

Any idea what is happing ?

BTW should it be like this :
Code:
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y

or

Code:
CONFIG_AGP=m
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=m
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m
??

A minute ago I found something like this /*at gentoo wiki web page*/ :

Quote:
Blank screen or monitor turning off after startx

Versions of ati-drivers >= 8.16.20 have an issue with this that's easily corrected by inserting:
File: xorg.conf

Option "ForceMonitors" "notv"

in the device section of xorg.conf (discussed here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103028)

Did you try this ?

Kamp, i don't think it matters whether you set the kernel's AGPGart-options to built-in or modular - that only means that the fglrx-module won't be able to use it's own internal-version (which in my experience, it can't anyway)...

...But i'm afraid i'm completely stumped as to why you're unable to build & load your module - sorry. :oops:

Well, I switched drivers and had even more problems at first, but emerging the latest ~x86 ati-drivers seemed to solve them. I don't even know if this is related, but it seems like every time now I try to use my bttv tv card (ati tv wonder, if relevant), I get a kernel panic. This wasn't happening before. Should I have expected this? ...... I should probably feel grateful though that this is the only thing screwing up on me atm XD

Hi there. I have a new notebook with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 and I can't get my X to work. I have installed the latest driver from ati, I ran

Code:
aticonfig --initial
aticonfig --resolution 1280x800

and all I get is a black screen. I noticed, that I'm back in the shell, but anything is black on black. When I reboot, I can see in my Xorg.log.0, that the chipset 0x7145 is not supported by the fglrx. Is there any way to get that card working? I tried to use vga as the driver, but I only get the unbelievable resulution of 320x200 pixels *whooooo*...

Can I use i.e.
Quote:
ChipID 0x4e48
to override my chip id?

Is there any other driver that I could use? 3D is not that important to me (though it would be nice). I just want to get my x working.... :?

I hadn't come across that article, but I went ahead and added the line to my xorg.conf file. However, nothing's changed; I still get the blank screen when X goes down.

I've tried rearranging the module startup order, tried using the internal gart, the kernel gart, all sorts of things, but it still doesn't seem to like logging out of X. Now that I think about it, it does seem odd that it would go blank on my monitor but still enable me to apply input (or still go about its tasks, like shutdown/reboot), so it seems reasonable to assume that the driver's switching the VGA-out to the TV-out or DVI-out. But I don't see why that would happen, especially since every possible option turning off TV-out has been set.

after updating my ati-drivers i get this:
Code:
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_unregister
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_get_request
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_put
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_register

i know that these symbols are depricated. they are implemented in the kernel source file intermodule.c which doesn't even get built at my machine (and i don't see an option how to enable it).

the fglrx can't load anymore and i did not change the kernel. falling back to the previous version didn't work too.

Okey, I spent few more hours "playing" with ATI drivers :(

I've made some discovers.
Code:

Configuring search environment for revdep-rebuild

Checking reverse dependencies...

Packages containing binaries and libraries broken by a package update
will be emerged.

Collecting system binaries and libraries...done.
  (/root/.revdep-rebuild.1_files)

mCollecting complete LD_LIBRARY_PATH... done.

Checking dynamic linking consistency...
  broken //usr/lib32/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1.2 (requires  libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6)
  broken /usr/lib32/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so (requires  libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6 libstdc++.so.5)
  broken /usr/lib32/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so (requires  libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6 libstdc++.so.5)
  broken /usr/lib32/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1.2 (requires  libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6)
 done.
  (/root/.revdep-rebuild.3_rebuild)

Assigning files to ebuilds... done.
  (/root/.revdep-rebuild.4_ebuilds)

Evaluating package order...done.
  (/root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order)

All prepared. Starting rebuild...
emerge --oneshot  =x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.22.5

// it emerges those drivers and gives

Code:

Build finished correctly. Removing temporary files...
You can re-run revdep-rebuild to verify that all libraries and binaries
are fixed. If some inconsistency remains, it can be orphaned file, deep
dependency, binary package or specially evaluated library.

When I re-run revdep-rebuild it gives me the same message every time :(

I also downloaded drivers from oficial ATI.com web page. I installed it, and victory ! fglrx works and it's being loaded. BUT agpgart and nvidia_agp/amd64-agp still can't be found. Another problem is when I try fglrxinfo or glxinfo, it screams that it wants some libraries 8O

CloudBolt, did you emerge xorg-server with the 'dri' USE-flag enabled?

Kamp, those missing libraries look like you're running xorg-7.0 as well. I looked through your earlier posts & noticed the 'dri' flag in your make.conf, but no mention of which version of X you have installed. Can you use the 'equery belongs' command to find out which package any of those libs are part of? Or maybe 'equery depgraph'... :?

Nope, I'm using the last stable version in portage -> 6.8.2. I added dri USE flag into make.conf just in case ;)

I'm starting to think that maybe there is some option in kernel (about modules or something) I didn't checked :x

looks like chuck norris round house kicked out that old stuff from the kernel :) (should have been done for a long time)
i had to change the line
Code:
obj-$(CONFIG_OBSOLETE_INTERMODULE) += intermodule.o

into
Code:
obj-y += intermodule.o

in the file /usr/src/linux-2.6.16-rc1-mm4/kernel/Makefile to get these functions back. ugly workaround, but it works for now. i hope the ati devs switch to the newer api soon since it looks like 2.6.16 will not use intermodules at all, there might be even no option to enable this from menuconfig.

I've just done a full reinstall of gentoo and everything thing is upto date as per portage tree, Running an athlon 2800 with 1gb ram and a radeon 9800.
Initially I had problems getting fglrx to work, it'll compile the module and everything fine, just would do no 3d rendering and glxinfo was purely MGI.
So I read through the wiki and did the kernel changes (On 2.6.15 kernel) and it worked! Yay.
However it's still not 100%, I've yet to be able to try a game on it, but....

I tried glxgears and it gets the fps of over 3000, however when I ctrl-c interrupt, the glxgears window closes but it doesn't return my console back to me.
Neither does glxinfo return my console after displaying the info, it just hangs.

Also tried to use wine but it hangs on 'creating directory .wine'.
xsreensaver won't work either and my pc won't shut down.

I'm using the latest version out of the portage tree, I'll try them off the ati site later but I was assuming the portage tree was meant to be stable?

I do appoligse if this stuff has been covered before but there are about four threads plus others to search through, no more help on the wiki.

no I didn't, I'll do that right now, should I remerge ati-drivers after that?

all right, everything works fine, and I don't get anymore errors, but running glxgears only gives me about 1900 fps. :cry:

It's probably keyboard-related rather than graphics-card-related. Try searching the forums for posts with the keyword 'XKeysymDB' - there's lots of talk about that over on the Modular Xorg thread (i'm up to page 30). :D

Since I can't even ssh into the box. It seems to be completely locked up. I don't believe it has anything to do with the XKeysymDB.
I was hoping that I would get additional messages that made more sense.

You're probably right about it not being 'XKeysymDB' - i was getting my X11R7-issue's mixed up, sorry about that. :oops:

I installed 'xorg-x11-7.0-r1' on a freshly-built system last night, & i've spent all of today trying to iron out the wrinkles in the keyboard configuration. I don't get the hard-locks that you & several others have experienced, but i do get a warning in 'Xorg.0.log' that's cropped up on that other thread :-
Code:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning:          Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
>                   Ignoring extra symbols

...Some of the fixes i've tried have rendered the 'CTRL-ALT-F*' keys unusable, like the other users i meant to point you in the direction of in my previous post.

I've also noticed that as soon as i touch any modifier-key (like 'CTRL' when i'm about to press 'CTRL-C' to stop 'glxgears'), the 'scroll-lock' LED lights up, which is an indication that the keyboard-configuration has 'switched groups', whatever that means. :?

I'm still trying to get my head round the way the various files in /usr/share/X11/kbd interact with each-other, as i'm convinced it can be resolved by configuring 'xorg.conf' suitably.

Fortunately, i have two systems installed on this PC on separate partitions, & the one i'm writing this from runs 'xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2', so i've got the older style of configuration (that works) to use as a reference.

If you haven't already seen it, have a look at the Gentoo Modular X HOWTO - the last section touches on the new keyboard-format, & may help an American more than it's helped me, so far... :roll:

If i find the fix, i'll be sure & let you know, & i hope you'll do likewise if you find it first. :wink:

To my eyes, you have no 3d because the Xinit-process is unable to open the graphics-card's DRI-device. This could be for only two reasons that i can think of; The device doesn't exist, or the user starting X doesn't have read/write permission to access it. So based on that premise, here are some questions, in no particular order :-

Do you have a reasonably good idea of which packages were included in the update? Have you run 'revdep-rebuild -p' to see if any libraries are no longer linking correctly?

Do the entries in 'dmesg' contain anything regarding 'radeon', 'drm' or 'agpgart' that doesn't look right?

Do you use the in-kernel DRM-support, or do you use 'x11-base/x11-drm' - if the latter, & a kernel-update was performed, or 'x11-drm' was updated, did you re-emerge 'x11-drm' against the new kernel source-tree?

Did 'udev' get updated? If so, does it now set the permissions or the device-name differently to before?

I'm sure there were other questions when i started writing this, but the ones above are all that are occurring to me right now. :oops: Let us know if they highlight any clues to get you back up & running...
