Any body got kernel panic with Gentoo-source 2.6.15-r1 & ati-drivers 8.23.7 and when I roll back to 8.22.5 strange coloration on my X and also miss place screen when switching back & fort from the console to X.

First of all I use Xorg-7.0-r1 and while testing some configuration I got this kind of kernel panic (I had think that it was due to via_agp & radeonfb presence in loaded modules but even after unloading them I got some how another kernel panic... I may reproduce the panic on request as I only took one panic messages (I had to write it down by hand got me bored and I fear I have mistaken some register)* ... got too much tired and I rebooted and switch back to kernel driver (radeon.ko)

* Any body know how to keep track of such messages? Maybe connecting my underway Performa 6400/200 on witch I had a 3com to connect it to my networks.. Don't recall if the modem is the Geoports one but I read in the past that I may connect gdb over null modem... *

So I was using ati opengl library (eselect opengl set ati) with Xorg-7.0-r1 and got this kernel message :

Would have help to have the kernel .config but I had to change it and as I got kernel panic I don't mind to trash it... I only rollback to my (enough) stable version as I never got kernel panic before not even under e17... some segfault but no kernel panic...

right, I did a complete reinstallation of Gentoo, this time with kernel 2.6.15-r5, and everything works fine(previously I was using r7), BUT there's still the occasional kernel panic when closing ppracer(opensource continuation of tuxracer). strangely enough this is the only program where I get this error, but I going to emerge a 3d app/game right now, for some testing.

I am using the fglrx drivers (8.22.5) and they work great...as root. I have the dri section in my xorg.conf:

Code:

Section "DRI"
        Mode         0666
EndSection

As both root and a user, glxgears shows the same - around 5000. 3d acceleration seems to be fine. The problem is 2d. As a user, if I do something like maximize the terminal window, it is a noticeably slow redraw. Same if I move a window over another, or if a drop down covers a window (like the gnome menu covering the terminal window). All of these activities are slow. The terminal is REALLY slow from a standpoint of scrolling back through the history or paging down through a document.

My user is a member of the video group. I can post from the xorg.conf, but since root is fine and the user is not, I guessing its not in there.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Has anyone with a PCIE card managed to work out the new ATI drivers on AMD64 system?
If yes, can he please write down the procedure?

I have an X800XL. I come from a fresh Stage3 installation.
After compiling ati-drivers, modprobing fglrx and setting opengl, I run "X", the screen went black, instant glitches
and got a majestic.....

Kernel Panic>not syncing.....Aieeee killing (sth I dont remember) interrupts
And the system hangs.

I have tried some suggestions I found in this forum but to no avail.

Furthermore, should I try to load the open source drivers(radeon module) and run X, I get that the system cannot find
an appropriate device at PCI:5:0:1.
Running lspci I saw that my card is at 5.0.0. I tried to change it in the xorg.conf but the problem remained......

I'm using gentoo-sources 2.6.14 or 2.6.15 (all of the above fail on both).
I have DRI and radeon driver compiled as module.
I dont have agp-gart compiled because I cannot. Although I have I pcie card I see that module been loaded much too often in all How-to's and beging to wander.

Any suggestions whould be appreciated...greatly.

I dont believe it. 8O 8O It wasn't ATI's fault.
It so happens that I dont have /dev/mouse .This is what caused the kernel panic. When I put /dev/psaux as a mouse driver in xorg.con it worked like charm....damn....

Cloudbolt (and anyone else who happens to stumble across this after experiencing the same problem):

That original module-loading problem you experienced looks very much like you have built xorg-X11 with the USE-flag dlloader. That doesn't seem to work at all, at the very least not with an ATI card and an amd64 system. Change the USE-flags and reemerge xorg-X11.

Always nice when the problem can't be blamed on ATI for a change, no? :)

Hi all, I'm new to these forums and linux/gentoo in general. A few days a go I managed to set up my computer with gentoo and able to get into X. The problems began when I wanted 3d acceleration. I've tried ati-drivers multiple times and also x11-drm, but I recently read that x11-drm is only upto radeon 9200?

ATI Radeon AIW 9700 Pro
Athlon XP 1800+
ASUS A7V880 (via kt 880)

2.6.15-gentoo-r1
xorg-x11 7.0-r1 (modular X I believe) with gnome 2.12.3

I tried everything I could think of on xorg-x11 6.8.x (the highest unmasked xorg-x11) first, but I've had more success on 7.0-r1
I've compiled the kernel with agpgart and via_agp as modules which are loaded in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 and the other settings mentioned in the Gentoo Radeon FAQ wiki - http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html

These are the settings I use in make.conf when emerging:
Code:

USE="-qt -kde gtk gnome hal howl dri opengl alsa"
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx ati"

This is how my graphics card device is set up in xorg.conf currently:
Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "ATI Graphics Adapter 0"
   Driver      "ati"
   VideoRam    131072
   Option      "AccelMethod" "exa"
   Option       "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
#   Option      "AGPMode" "4"
   Option       "mtrr" "off"
   BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Switch out Driver "ati" for Driver "fglrx" when I try those drivers, only way for me to get into X currently is with ati, otherwise it just crashes after attempting to load gnome panels and I am forced to do a hard reboot.

I have noticed that if I do not load via_agp module and attempt to startx with fglrx driver I can get in, but the result is the same, no 3d acceleration or any form of improvement.

Is there anything else you need to be able to get a picture of my problem or a solution?

I am completely out of ideas of what to try myself, been trying different stuff for the last 2 days now. Any tips appreciated, thanks!

[edit] forgot to mention but I have done aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf so I have Load "dri" & Load "glx" in xorg.conf too

hwave:

Hi, im running 9700XT on Xorg-X11-6.8.2 and im fine:

i found

ATI stuff (this is last time I checked -- 3 months ago) has not been working w/ xorg modular. There were issues w/ static/dynamic loading/building, headers to name a few. I have my ati (I only have one of over a dozen) running on vesa or something right now which gives 1600x1200 but no 2d accel which is functional but not acceptable.
*at the bottom...hmm, howto select a certain post?*

I'm using 'Driver "fglrx"'

order in modules.autoload.d:
agpgart
intel-agp
fglrx

You should have a look at dmesg && /var/log/Xorg.0.log . do grep fglrx.
I've come to read about problems with mtrr being not properly setted up. Solution for this was to set Kernelparameter for VideoRAM. Sorry, i dont have the link at hand.

My pov.

kind regards...

Thansks for the response!

I was under the impression that it would work, I read through part of "radeon sticky part2" and most of part3 and there was mention of it working under modular x. Did I understand you correct that I should attempt to go back to xorg-6.8.x (that unmasked version) and try again?

About dmesg and the log file, I wish I could have a look at those, unfortunately my computer freezes as I attempt to start x using fglrx, so I am unable to view any error messages left by it...

How would I set the kernelparameter for VideoRAM?

I did some more reading and found out I had misinterpreted the use of "UseInternalAGPGART", I've tried setting that to yes and since that change x loads up completely some times, but it still freezes after I try to do anything.

I just skimmed throught the last four pages, but I've seen a few people asking why they don't have direct rendering and it's because they have composite turned on. I've seen someone ask the question twice, how to enable glx with composite and I didn't see an answer. Is it possible? What option do you use? The fglrx equivalent of AllowGLXWithComosite on nvidia driver?

I don't have composite turned on, just did a search for "composite" in xorg.conf and it returns nothing. In fact I am not sure what composite is for...

hwave: you should have acces to Xorg.0.log.

here are two links about the mtrr setup:

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?threadid=33736241
http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1333981360&postcount=18

Well, i would suggest to fallback to Xorg-stable and see if you can get it on.
I switched back from modularX, was a bit to heavy for me :D setting up XGL...
i had to wind down ;) no good to screw my system every 10secs, just for testing-sake...nevermind
check against https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=73260
and do step by step.
sure, UseInternalAGPGART should be set to "no"

Good luck

:)

Running dmesg after your system freezed (and you rebooted :D) will still give you information about your gfx initialisation and loading of fglrx, agpgart modules (think about grepping them after booting)

I rebooted and checked dmesg and Xorg.0.log, searching for fglrx, agpgart & via_agp, I didn't see any errors...?? I think I'm going to unmerge modular X now and revert to 6.8.x and give it another shot. Thanks for the ideas :)

[update] After unmerging xorg-x11 7.0 I am now back in xorg-x11 6.8.x (still can't remember the last digit ).

I now have a different problem where I can't even start x, I get an error saying it's unable to load module fglrx. It must've been built succesfully though since I can modprobe fglrx without any problems... I've tried remerging both xorg-x11 and ati-drivers since but x can't recognize fglrx for some reason.

It seems emerging back to monolithic x is a pain since there are like 100 x libraries/drivers/fonts/proto headers installed with modular x that can't be so easy cleaned up... I tryed to emerge back to 6.8.2 and i broke my tree and i had to reemerge the modular x just to fix it. Revdep-rebuild was of little help here. Anyway I'm back again where i started with a modular x that freezes my system with 100% cpu. I have tryed the vga and ati driver too, beside fglrx but the most I could get was a black screen with 10 green dots that moved when i moved the mouse on the same line. Anyway there is a separate thread where people complain about the same problem. It seems ati+amd64+modularx = blocker.

:D It finally works! an ATI Radeon X550 PCI-E and XGL!

right, sorry for exaggerating a bit, but you can imagine I'm quite happy. with X.org 7 it was fairly easy to install the drivers(and yes, I know I've been asking everyone's ears off in this topic, but after reïnstalling X for the, about 500th time(I love exaggerating a bit...) the drivers installed and ran like a breeze. I don't really remember what I did differently from last tries, but if anyone has questions, please ask) just install the drivers the way you normally would(with X 6.8.2), and yes, I know they aren't fully compatible with X 7 yet, so you won't get normal speeds(like you used to get with 6.8.2), but I was able to get around 6000 fps. which is more than enough for running XGL.

I tried going to to xorg 6.8.x but as others said that's quite difficult, I got lots of problems after that and just reparitioned the disk and reinstalled gentoo. I'm back up with xorg-x11 6.8.x now and it actually starts with fglrx. glxinfo | grep direct even says yes now! :) However, whenever I attempt to run games or glxgears or similar apps I get the usual freeze. Will look that up a bit and if anyone has any tips I'm all ears, thanks!

Does anyone have problem with ati-drivers-8.23.7 and xdm 6.8.2?
Starting X and kde automatically with /etc/init.d/xdm ends with a black screen and an unresponsive comp
kdm can start kde but trying to restart X with Ctrl+Alt+back ends with the same black screen
moving to consol and back make the comp unresponsive but with a weirdcolored screen

Just upgraded to xorg-x11-7.0-r1 on my ~amd64 system. I am using the free radeon driver with my generic ATI Radeon 9200 SE (5964 AGP 128MB). I did the revdep-rebuild and ensured that I had selected xorg-x11 opengl:

# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] xorg-x11 *
[3] nvidia

2D display is OK, but I'm having some problems.

1) 3D no longer works in 16-bit mode, it only works in 24-bit mode. I used 16-bit 3D before, so I'm unable to do a direct 6.8.2/7.0 comparison, but glxgears 24-bit 7.0 is about 10% slower than 16-bit 6.8.2. Is this a bug with 7.0, or an xorg design decision to only support 24bit 3D?

2) EXA acceleration is MUCH slower than XAA when selected in xorg.conf, looks like no hardware acceleration is taking place although the log says EXA is enabled.

3) 3D programs give strange errors. In 16-bit, I just get the errors and the program doesn't start. In 24-bit, I get errors but the program(s) start.

5) Trying to use AGP 8X or enabling fastwrites in xorg.conf results in complete lockup. My AGP card and motherboard supposedly support both. This is with AGP set to 8X with AGP Fastwrites enabled on an Asrock 939Dual-Sata2.

6) Is there a script or how-to detailing how to roll back to 6.8.2 if needed? I did make a package prior to upgrading as per the Modular X howto.

I could use some help in determining which of these are configuration problems and which are bug reports that need to be filed. Thanks.

A probably very known problem with Ati boards. I've got a Radeon 9600, kernel 2.6.15-r1 and get the following error from dmesg:

Code:
[drm:drm_unlock] *ERROR* Process 6040 using kernel context 0

What's the problem with my kernel? I tried both switching on and off the drm_module (which should be off). But now that it's off,
sometimes fglrx is still complaining about some drm kernel module interfering. Strange, anyone?

Thanks, supernov

I also experienced lockups (even before starting X, but with framebuffers) and therefore sticked to kernel 2.4
that was 1 year ago :)
but now, from scratch, I installed 2.6 again and without doing anything special I have no lockups.

I have an ATI Radeon 9200 (0x5961)
Intel Pentium 4
AC97 Audio : snd-intel8x0

and currently using:

KDE 3.4.3
kernel 2.6.15-gentoo-r1
xorg-x11 6.8.2-r6
gcc 3.4.5

Am I the only one who's having trouble using 1920x1200 ?

Me X.org does only 1080 - everything above 1080 is ignored by the driver (?)

I have a problem with my monitor turning off when exiting X, after which I can't turn it back on until I blindly reboot/shutdown (i.e. the power button on the monitor just blinks indicating that it isn't getting a video signal).

Below is the output in Xorg.0.log:
Code:
Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x9e) [0x80baa8e]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

(EE) fglrx(0): === [R200DALSetControllerConfigForRemap] === CWDDC ControllerSetConfig failed: 7 - 0

The strange thing is that this doesn't happen every time, and seems more likely to happen the longer X has been running. When this doesn't happen though I sometimes get a similar output in the log (and sometimes it exits normally):
Code:
Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x9e) [0x80baa8e]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

I've had a look around (google, ati bugzilla, gentoo forums) and can't seem to find anyone with the same problem, however there seem to be people with similar problems and similar output in the logs.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there a resolution? Thanks :)

I just upgraded from xorg-x11-6.8.2 to 6.9 and now the rendering is SLOW! I'm using a Radeon Mobility 7500 (rv200) with the "radeon" drivers at 24 bit depth. 2D speed used to be fine and glxgears gave about 500 fps, but now everything is slow (e.g. scrolling in firefox) and I get 10 fps in glxgears! If I try using EXA, it drops to 6 fps, and adding Composite makes it go down to 4. Going down to 16 bpp did not help at all. My kernel version if gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1. 'glxinfo' does say direct rendering is enabled. Here are the relevent parts of my xorg.conf:
Code:

Section "Module"
   Load  "record"
   Load  "extmod"
   Load  "dbe"
   Load  "dri"
   Load  "glx"
   Load  "xtrap"
   Load  "freetype"
   Load  "type1"
        Load  "synaptics"
EndSection
Section "Device"
        Option      "ColorTiling" "false"
#Option      "AccelMethod" "EXA"  # also tried enabling this
        Option      "AGPFastWrite" "true"
        Option      "EnablePageFlip" "true"
        Option      "AGPMode" "4"
#Option      "BackingStore" "true"  # tried with and without - no help
        Option      "RenderAccel" "true"
   Identifier  "Card0"
   Driver      "radeon"
   VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName   "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
   BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
Section "dri"
  Mode 0666
EndSection

I've tried all sorts of combinations of those options in the card's section to no avail. This is so slow it is unusable. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks

itsr0y, i'm running xorg-x11-7.0 (same as 6.9, but modular) with a Radeon 9200SE (RV280), & the only option in the device-section that i found did any good when i first set this up was 'EnablePageFlip'; 'AGPFastWrite' did nothing to the framerate, 'RenderAccel' is already on by default, using XAA, & the newer alternative, 'EXA', is disabled if you enable 'PageFlip', & doesn't improve things if used instead.

The only thing in my xorg.conf that i don't see in your's is :-
Code:
    SubSection  "extmod"
Option    "omit xfree86-dga"   # don't initialise the DGA extension
    EndSubSection

...In the 'modules' section. I can't remember why it seemed like a good idea, but it might be worth a try - note that the above replaces the existing 'Load "extmod"', rather than complementing it (if that's wrong, would others please post a correction).

Also in the 'modules' section, i don't have 'record' or 'xtrap' loaded, but i also have no idea what they are, so i figure you do & have deemed them necessary.

Nothing else leaps to mind, i'm afraid...
