Hi!
I have tried to get direct rendering to work on my Radeon 9800Pro. Using kernel 2.6.15.
Can load fglrx and everyting seem to work fine.
But glxgears gives me only 150 fps...
My xorg logg says
Code: |
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
(WW) fglrx(0): *********************************************
|
How do I solve that? |

This'll be the 4th radeon-related thread that i'll be currently posting on, so i apologise in advance if i get the various issues mixed up...
Regarding the above quote, assuming your username is already in the 'video' group, is there anything that doesn't look right in the output of 'dmesg'? A lot of the solutions listed in the Gentoo Radeon FAQ refer to the output of that command. _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

Actually my user was not in the videogroup ut i am now, ut no diference.
I found a nother error in the xorg log file
Code: |
(EE) fglrx: Failed to load module "drm" (module does not exist, 0)
|
I thougt that i chould disale the drm in the kernel? Or is this something else?
I am still looking for errors in dmesg, I will post if I run into something, or if I solve everyting:) |

This is referring to the 'fglrx' module's own internal-drm - the one in the kernel does need to be disabled.

The way you load your modules can make finding things in 'dmesg' difficult - try this command to make it easier :-
...& post the output here, if you'd like some help understanding it. _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

That suggests that no commands have even been made to load the module - what do you see if you type 'lsmod'? _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

I'm having problems getting X to display anything on my DFP monitor off my ATI Radeon 7500 All-In-Wonder. However, it does work with a CRT. Any ideas?

Hey there. ATI Radeon 9200, xorg 6.8.2-r6. After much wasted time and swearing, I finally got 3D acceleration working with xorg's radeon driver... sort of. Only after a few minutes, any of the 3D screensavers lock up on me. Anyone have any ideas? |

Yeah, two ideas...
The first is to use 'ati-drivers', because the 'radeon' driver can't provide a fast enough frame-rate to cope with the opengl-screensavers (33% slower on my system)...
...The second is to upgrade 'xorg-x11' to the new hardmasked version-7.0-r1, which uses a new acceleration-method called 'EXA'.
The second option is just a theory, though, as i'm still reading up on it, before giving it a try myself on my 9200SE (RV280) - if you want to wait about a week, i'll let you know how i get on... _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

vanten, did you emerge xorg-x11-7.0-r1 with the 'dri' USE-flag enabled for the modules that need it (xorg-server, etc)? _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

I have properly installed the ATi Proprietary Linux drivers from ati.com, because ati-drivers failed to correctly create the fglrx module, and everything works fine now, except for two little problems(all right, so NOT everything works fine ): my video RAM should be 256 MB(Radeon X550 256MB), but ATi Control, Cedega and most games display that it is a 64 MB card, and therefore use it as such, not using the card full capability. secondly, completely random, when I start a 3D application/game, such as TuxRacer, it either runs smooth(as smooth as a 64 MB card can handle), or quits GNOME and X and gives a kernel panic, not syncing error, which is most likely caused by the kernel module, because each time I get an error(they're all different errors), it mentions fglrx at least once.
any help would be greatly appreciated
I forgot to mention: my kernel version is 2.6.15-gentoo-r4(gentoo-sources), my X version is X.org 6.8.2, my GNOME version is 2.12, my ati drivers version is 8.22.5 _________________ GNU/Linux is an operating system.

Well, i'm new to xorg-7 (probably building it next week), so i'm not certain...
I think you need VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" in your /etc/make.conf, which pulls in 'ati-drivers'. I don't think you need 'xf86-video-via', that's for VIA graphics-cards. For your KT400 chipset, enabling via-agp as a module in the kernel-configuration should be all you need.
I asked about the USE-flag because your logs were saying that the DRI part of Xlib was missing, which i guessed was because the USE-flag wasn't enabled for the server-emerge.
As long as your kernel was built correctly to support 'ati-drivers' before, the only other idea i have is to re-emerge 'ati-drivers' now that 'xorg-server' has DRI-support.
Whoa! Sorry, i just noticed that you said you have 'x11-drm' emerged - for 'ati-drivers', that would be the same as having DRM enabled in the kernel. As long as you emerged it yourself, & it isn't a dependency of X11R7, i think you'll need to unmerge it before 'ati-drivers' will work.
Sorry if i'm not being clear enough - i'm following 3 or 4 different radeon-threads & trying to learn how to install X11R7 all at the same time, so my head's a bit frazzled right now... _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

I had ati drivers for some month ago. with the same kernel options and so on.
@ taipan67: I got the VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" that you mention. But i have vga too, vga cant make it all wrong then?
have unmerge x11-drm and libdrm now, do i had emerge them by my self. find out that x11R7 had an 3dfx USE-flagg. cheacking out now if that is what i had missed.
And secondly, included dlloader and opengl USE-flags just to be sure. _________________ .: GNU/Linux :: Gentoo :: Fluxbox :.

I don't think so. Of the different options that can go into 'VIDEO_CARDS=', only 'fglrx' & 'nvidia' use external packages that build actual kernel-modules - the others build the X-libraries that are needed by the corresponding open-source drivers that come with the kernel.
Quote: | have unmerge x11-drm and libdrm now, do i had emerge them by my self. |
As best as i can tell, you don't need x11-drm, but you do need libdrm - it's a dependency required by xorg-server.
Quote: | find out that x11R7 had an 3dfx USE-flag. checking out now if that is what i had missed.
And secondly, included dlloader and opengl USE-flags just to be sure. |
You should only need 3dfx if you have one of their graphics-cards. You definitely want 'opengl' USE-flag, but probably not 'dlloader' - it isn't used by 'ati-drivers-8.22.5', & it's the default for X11R7, anyway (use the '-v' option with 'emerge' to see what USE-flags are being applied).
Maybe your best bet would be to get rid of 'x11-drm', make sure your USE-flags are how you need them, & run :-
...(the '-p' is for pretend-mode, the same as for 'emerge') - 'revdep-rebuild' is part of 'gentoolkit', & it ought to highlight any broken library-dependencies for you & correct them when you run it without the pretend-option. _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

And my kernel: http://m3ntos.ath.cx/~kamp/kernel.config
lsmod gives me nothing. I added fglrx, agpgart and nvidia_agp into /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file, but I get only errors, that they can't be found.
Any idea what is going on ? Maybe I should update gcc to 3.4.4 and recompile ati-drivers ? Or maybe emerge xorg 7.0 or download ati-drivers stable version once again (but I also had the problem with DRI and blank screen)... ? |

That's why DRI won't work - now we have to figure out why 'fglrx' won't load...
When you boot your system, the kernel looks for it's modules in a sub-directory of /lib/modules who's name matches the version-number at the top of your '.config' file. That's why, when you emerge 'ati-drivers', it's important to have the /usr/src/linux symlink pointing to the kernel source-tree that matches the kernel it's going to work with - 'ati-drivers' installs the 'fglrx' module into a new 'video' sub-directory of that original modules-directory.
My guess would be that you've emerged 'ati-drivers' against a differently-configured source-tree, & the module isn't where your current kernel is looking for it.
I'd suggest re-emerging 'ati-drivers' after first making certain that the kernel source-tree matches the kernel you're using, & that the /usr/src/linux symlink points to it correctly.
There may also be problems with how the modules are being loaded, but before i get into that, i'd like to hear if what i've already written differs from your current setup. _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

Hello,
I have been having a problem with lockups using the Xorg drivers and back using the XFree86 drivers as well, but, moving forward, I have installed the latest Xorg Gentoo package 7.0.0-rc1 on my machine, AND wonder of wonders managed to get everything that I use working . That means, I have 3D, and the Multimedia bits of the card working, which is very nice. GLXGears shows a consistant 1470+-5 FPS which seems decent to me. And, the TV Tuner is working from within xawtv (XVideo mode). AVView also works.
My problem is: If I do a simple change resolution (C-A-+ or -), usually it takes two, my machine will lock up. NumLock and CapsLock no longer lighting the indicators locked up. C-A-Del doesn't work as well.
Based upon comments in this long sequence of messages, I have disabled the RadeonFB driver in the kernel. I even disabled the VESA FB driver as well - don't really need FB.
I haven't tried the ATI binary drivers, since they don't allow the multimedia functions of the card to work.
Some Dmesg output:
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones

It's probably keyboard-related rather than graphics-card-related. Try searching the forums for posts with the keyword 'XKeysymDB' - there's lots of talk about that over on the Modular Xorg thread (i'm up to page 30). _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |
