I have in my notebook PIII 600, ok speedstep works ok but only downgrades it to 500,, and sometimes I think it should run slower (web surfing, writing & reading),, I use athcool home on my AthlonXP and I can make my CPU about 10C cooler!! so If I can use something like this in my notebook I think it would be a good for battery saving _________________ Arch & Fluxbox & 2.6.24-rc-zen!!!!

Maybe you have ACPI throttling (look at the bottom of the page) in addition to Speedstep ? This won't reduce frequency in itself, but it should reduce power by forcing the CPU into stop grant state (a kind of low power idle state) at a certain duty cycle (say 50% of the time in stop grant state, and 50% normal).
Athcool drops the temperature a lot because Athlon CPUs not only need to be in stop grant state to go into low power mode, but they also need to be disconnected from the system bus. While the CPU usually already is in stop grant state on idle, most chipsets don't have the disconnect bit enabled by default, so the CPU stays there using a lot of power. Athcool enables the disconnect bit, so temperature drops a lot on an idle CPU. But it's very specific (and normally BIOS developers should already have done it - but many/most forgot) and I don't think a Pentium III has something similar. |
