I have looked at WEDGE'S ati site http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html#1_whyuse as well as http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers they're all suggesting to compile the kernel by saying Y to /dev/agpgart AND enable my chipset. However there is NO VIA chipset but only Intel's agp. Am I missing something here?

My kernel is 2.6.14 r5 and the AGP card id ATI RADEON 9500 PRO.

thx

i dont kow about your kernel but my 2.6.14.2 kernel lists:
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
 Character devices  --->
  <*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
   < >   VIA chipset support
  <*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
   < >   Via unichrome video cards

cheers,

Code:
--- /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)                                                        x x
  x x                 <M>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support                               x x
  x x                 < > Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)

I think i read somewhere that agpgart has been built into the kernel automatically. i think that's why there is no selection slot [ ]; however I see only INTEL's and there is no VIA chipset :? 8O hmmmm anyone has explanation to this?

ak47, you must use a kernel version 2.6.13 or newer to have drm on via. As an alternative, you could emerge x11-drm (which, despite the name, provides equivalents to kernel modules).
