I have decided to bite the bullet and see if gentoo is as good as I am always being told.
Before I try it out on my main system and server I want to do a dry run on a little p200 I have laying around. This pc only has a small HDD (2.5gb), 128mb RAM and is goiing to be connected to the net via my LAN.
I am not worried about installing a graphical interface, I just want to get Apache, PHP and MySQL working.
Is this system spec good enough for the aove installation (I am not worried that the install will be slow) or should I try to get my hands on a better test PC? _________________ Cheers

You should have no problem at all running Gentoo on that box, although it will take forever. _________________ Man must shape his tools lest they shape him. |

I'm not too worried if it is slow. I just want to be sure of what I am doing before I commint to making changes to my main PC's (running RH8 & SuSE 8.1 atm) _________________ Cheers

It will run ok after it is installed. But doing a install from stage 1 could be VERY tedious. In this situation I would recommend a stage 3 install. If you are just using it to get used to gentoo the performance differences won't matter that much anyway.

If you are thinking about really using that machine though, and want to get the full effect, I would go with a stage1... but that is just me. If you just want to toy around with it, a stage3 would work fine, but don't judge the performance of things by that. |

IMHO there is no noticable performance difference between stage 1 and stage 3 especially now that stage 3 tars are available with processor specific optimizations. Mind you procesor specifics gives < than 10% anyway.
I would recommend as little compilation as possible, due to the time it will take on the low spec hardware. GRP packages will help here too. Be carefull of your graphics card and compatibility with Xfree4.xx if you want X windows, check it first.
Also check your network card is supported (especially if its ISA) |

Or you could compromise, using a stage 3 tarball to get your system going, and rebuilding the compiler toolchain and system programs once the system is working the way you watn it. _________________ Man must shape his tools lest they shape him. |

did an full stage-1 install with X and even kde 3.1 on a P133 64Mb ram...took me almost a week and kde took 4 minutes to load (after i re-emerged fontconfig )
so you'll be just fine...
one tip though...buy a good book or something.
