I have installed Gentoo for the first time on my primary desktop PC and emerge'd kde-meta. First time KDE user, always used lightweight window managers before as I have never installed Linux on a desktop. Anyway, all the fonts are way too small - unreadable. I google'd for information and they all told me to use the Control Centre to change font sizes. That is only so helpful. It is a DPI problem: 8pt fonts are the size of 5pt fonts, 12pt the size of 7pt, etc. This is NOT just a problem with gtk+ applications (although Firefox is also unreadably small), it affects every KDE app including kdm/xdm.

Here's some info:

Using packages:
kde-base/kde-meta-3.4.3
xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6 (with -font-server ...could this be my problem?)
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.22.5

What are these errors all about?

Could be your dpi is not set correctly in your xorg.conf.

Some apps use this, some do not.

Firefox can be set to do either.

Nvidia cards/drivers can use the dpi setting info from the monitor (which can be wrong, which is how I found out about this). I don't know that ATI is doing the same thing.

Google xorg.conf and dpi, and you should get plenty of info.

All the font path errors are just that, font paths in your xorg.conf file that don't actually exist. I doubt they are causing the problem. You can delete references to directories and fonts that don't exist in your xorg.conf You may consider re-ordering the font paths in your xorg.conf so that the fonts you would want to show up if two are named the same would be first in the path (in general, make the TTF show up earlier if these are the fonts you generally want to use).

I have set:

DisplaySize 400 225

in my xorg.conf. Peculiar, because I am using a huge display (32" LCD tv: about 800mm by 550mm) and setting it to that makes it even smaller than without DisplaySize in xorg.conf. Perhaps the DPI information it is pulling from my TV is incorrect. This fixes my problems for the most part, but I still have problems with Firefox. I have told it to respect system settings but it is still far too small.

Is there some guide for running GTK applications (ahem, firefox) underneath KDE with respect to fonts/DPI?

Thanks.
