I re-booted my Gentoo AMD-64 box yesterday and got the message "ide-0..not found" from the BIOS. Dumb-founded, I tried repeatedly rebooting over and over again only to see that same message. With tears in my eyes I tried to boot with a Gentoo CD and was able to mount the root and boot partitions and they seemed to be intact. The home partition and others are LVM's so I did not try to get those up yesterday (it was getting late when this happened).
I think its just the MBR that has gotten corrupted. Does anyone have a painless way to fix this? Can GRUB restore the MBR or would reinstalling GRUB help?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. _________________ Never trust a pre-compiled kernel.

The MBR was corrupted. I was able to boot using a gentoo install disk and mount my root and boot partitions. Then I chrooted over and reinstalled grub using the grub root and setup commands.
I am just not sure why my MBR got wacked in the first place. _________________ Never trust a pre-compiled kernel. |
