Evenin all,

I am new to the whole Linux scene and have chsoen gentoo as my virgin voyage ( following a friends strong suggestion ).

I have downloaded LiveCD and followed the relevant online guide to install Gentoo.

I get as far as compiling the kernel using genkernel all. Once I have left this to run I get an error at the end say

Quote:
ERROR: Failed to compile the "modules" target...

My hardwware is bog standard old rubbish lol

the cpu being a celeron 500mhz with 64mb ram.

Could anyone offer any advice at all?

Cheers.

Well, could you give us some more spesific errors? You can find the genkernel log in /var/log. Look for the error there, its impossible to tell you what to do without the exact error!

*Exactly* what command are you typing before you receive that error?

Steve :)

Hi,

I am going through the motions again just to double check. I will post the results as soon as I have them and if I get any errors this is.

Just to double check, in make.conf would I use -march i686 or -mcpu i686 for a intel celeron 500mhz dated approx 1999.

Cheers.

I have gotten round to attempting the install again.

To answer th latest question asked first. I used # genkernel all
The install started etc and at the end it says failed.

Below you will see as much of the install as I could get from putty

My make.conf file looks as follows

Quote:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage

# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example

CFLAGS="-Os -mcpu=i686 -pipe"

CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"

CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I have even tried with the line USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde dvd alsa cdr" added under CXXFLAGS as per document, but I always seem to get an error.

Thank you.
