hi!

i wanted to install UT2004 on my box but i get the following error:

Code:
localhost mnt # emerge ut2004
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 3) games-fps/ut2004-data-3186 to /
>>> md5 files   ;-) ut2004-data-3186.ebuild
>>> md5 files   ;-) files/digest-ut2004-data-3186
 * This is a huge package.  If you do not have at least 7GB of free
 * disk space in /var/tmp and also in /opt then
 * You should abort this installation now and free up some space.
 * This package will need access to 6 cds.

 * If you do not have the CDs, but have the data files

 *  CD_ROOT_1 CD_ROOT_2 CD_ROOT_3 CD_ROOT_4 CD_ROOT_5 CD_ROOT_6
 * Or, if you have all the files in the same place, or
 * you only have one cdrom, you can export CD_ROOT
 * and that place will be used as the same data source
 * for all the CDs.

 * For example:
 * export CD_ROOT_1=/mnt/cdrom

 * Found CD #1 root at /mnt/cdrom

grep: /mnt/cdrom/linux-installer.sh: Input/output error

the cdrom is mounted to /mnt/cdrom and my user has chmod 666 permission on this folder. also also tried to copy the whole dvd to my harddisk but linux says:

Code:
localhost mnt # cp /mnt/cdrom/CD1 /mnt/ut
cp: omitting directory `/mnt/cdrom/CD1'

help is appreciated ;) tia

The input/output error messages make it sound like maybe you have a bad CD/DVD.

As far as the cp, to grab directories you need the -R option, i.e. cp -R /mnt/cdrom/CD1 /mnt/ut

i have got an Sony DRU-810A drive - according to one of my colegues this drive has massive problems with kernel 2.6.15 or linux in general. you just cant activate dma. i built in another drive from another box and it works fine. so it was a pure hardware issue... thx anyway

A note for anyone having simialr problems with UT2004: You'll almost certainly also need to grab the ENTIRE DVD to a directory. The ECE and original DVDs have different layouts and the UT2004 ebuilds have to differentiate between them.

Is there any problems with the 3dgamers servers? How can i tell emerge to use an alternative server? The first to emerges work nice but when it comes to download the ECE, emerge doens't find any server an exits after some minutes/retries... i tried it yesterday (morning, afternoo, evening) and today. any information about that? :cry:

No. Read the bugs, try the solution, ideally post some feedback on the bug as to whether it worked, and specify which ebuild you tried.

You need to grab the ebuilds from the bugs into your local portage overlay. See link below ("Portage" section) for lots of background information - it's required reading. It's quite a learning hurdle the first time, that's all.

You'll end up creating /usr/local/portage/games-fps/ut2004-bonuspack-ece/ and /usr/local/portage/games-fps/ut2004-megapack/

To grab the ebuilds easily, you can use e.g.:
Code:
wget -O ut2004-megapack-1.ebuild http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=79644
ebuild ut2004-megapack-1.ebuild digest
emerge ut2004-megapack

Our sentences tend to be to-the-point - it's not intentionally being rude, it's just the geek style :wink:

thx a lot - so i need to do:

overlay:

Code:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"

in /etc/make.conf

create
Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/games-fps/ut2004-bonuspack-ece/

and
Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/games-fps/ut2004-megapack/

then place the ebuild in which folder? the megapack-one? and i just have to name the ebuild "u2004-megapack.ebuild" and copy the attachment text into it?

then a

Code:
wget -O ut2004-megapack-1.ebuild http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=79644
ebuild ut2004-megapack-1.ebuild digest
emerge ut2004-megapack

is enough to install ut2004? no emerge ut2004 any more? isn't there a guide somewhere where the steps are listed one after another?

Both ebuilds go in their own directory, with the directory name the same as the package name.

No, that's what wget does. You can see the filename to use, and the http URL, by looking at the bug report.

There's still emerge ut2004. ut2004 is a dependency of both these bonus-pack ebuilds, so it will be dragged in automatically, if it's not already installed.

There's the list of reading material I provided. If you're looking for a few easy-to-read paragraphs which make everything crystal clear, that's impossible - there's too many concepts involved in custom good-practice package management :)

ok i created /usr/portage/games-fps/ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1 (my portage tree seems to be located in /usr/portage as my /usr/local/portage dir is empty).
the ebuild file (ut-2004-bonuspack-ece-1.ebuild) is in the dir but i get following error
Code:
localhost bluefoxx # ebuild ut-2004-bonuspack-ece-1.ebuild digest
!!! Name error in ut-2004-bonuspack-ece-1: multiple version parts.
!!! Error: PF is null 'ut-2004-bonuspack-ece-1'; exiting.

i removed the ut-2004-bonuspack-ece (without "1") dir because is complained about some similar files. i still get the same error with the "...-ece-1" dir with the ebuild in it :cry:

same for the megapack-1.ebuild
Code:
localhost bluefoxx # ebuild ut-2004-megapack-1.ebuild digest
!!! Name error in ut-2004-megapack-1: multiple version parts.
!!! Error: PF is null 'ut-2004-megapack-1'; exiting.

Then create it with mkdir. Any changes you make to /usr/portage/ will be overwritten the next time you run emerge --sync.

The filenames are exactly as specified in the bugs. Portage will not accept them if you choose to insert your own random dashes into the filenames, or miss out the version number :wink:

ok, neverending story...

i did the following

Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/games-fps/ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1

then

Code:
localhost ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1 # wget -O ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1.ebuild http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=79552

then
Code:
localhost ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1 # ebuild ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1.ebuild digest

That's not what I wrote. Only the filename contains the version number. That's why the digest fails. Rename the directory to ut2004-bonuspack-ece

That's correct behaviour. It's downloading the megapack, rather than the (removed) bonuspack-ece.

The problem you're seeing is that some of the mirrors aren't communicating (e.g. "login incorrect"), or are down. Portage will cycle through them.

The list of mirrors for 3dgamers should probably be cleaned - specified in /usr/portage/profiles/thirdpartymirrors

thank you for your patience, i think i learned so many things in this thread that i never learned myself in 1 month ;) thumbsup for this great forum/mebers over there 8)

i cleared the 3dgamers mirros in the specified file, its downloading now the packs :)

i used the following 2 ebuilds:

ut2004-bonuspack-ece-1.ebuild --> https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=79552
and
ut2004-megapack-1.ebuild --> https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=79644

edit: ok, its up an running now :D i've gt a dual 20" LCD config. sound was ok the first time i started the game. then i changed my xorg.conf from
Code:
Option "MetaModes" (1600x1200,1600x1200; 1280x1024,1280x1024)

to
Code:
Option "MetaModes" (1600x1200,1600x1200; 1600x1200, NULL; 1280x1024,1280x1024)

to play the game on one LCD instead of the middle of both (with the monitor-frames in the screen)) --> now the sound is gone?! :?:

playback with xmms and other apps works well

OK, now do me a favour and add comments to those bugs on bugzilla (where the devs are actually listening, and might be encouraged to put the ebuilds into Portage), stating that the ebuilds work, and specifying which ebuilds you used.
