i just got the adsl service from bell canada, and find out that there is noticeable speed drop in linux (feels like my linux spend lots of time on looking for the ip address of the domains - downloading the page is fast...) . i have my desktop running gentoo and my laptop running winxp right now (both connected to the modem/router), and it takes way longer to load www.gentoo.org in linux than in winxp...i guess that there are some settings get wrong in my gentoo box, but i don't know have a clue where gets wrong... anyone has a idea plz reply!!!!! thanks !!!

Well, easy way to verify this is to access a website using the IP directly (for Gentoo forums, this may be http://140.211.166.170/) and compare speeds that way. If it's same speed, then you should compare nameserver settings for whatever OSes you're using, chances are that for some reason in Linux you've got a bad setting / slow nameserver which takes ages to reply. |

thanks for the suggestion, frostschuts! and the answer is the speed indeed gets faster (the same as what's in winxp) if you access the site with ip address directly...
because there is no delay when i actually ping a domain, one of my friend told me to disable the IPV6 support in firefox ( setting 'true' in "network.dns.disableIPv6" ) and it works!! |
