Whenever I run
Code:
Xorg -configure
like The X Server Configuration HOWTO says, I get the following error:
Code:
Xorg is not able to detect your mouse.
Edit the file and correct the device
What might I do to fix this? I notice that there is no /dev/mouse. Might this be a problem?

update Per this Gentoo wiki, I fixed my mouse settings.

You do have a mouse, I presume ?

I have whatever one came with an HP Omnibook 6100. Is there a utility that I could easily emerge that would give me a detailed list of what I have (some Gentoo equiv to AIDA32)?

Erm.. you do understand that I meant what kind of interface it has, yes ?
It's either built-in, PS/2, or USB... there's not a wide range of options here.

If you want to find out what kind of relevant hardware you have, run
Code:
lspci

from the LiveCD; add -v to see more detail (rarely needed)

Didn't catch that. I have the touchpad that comes with my HP Omnibook. When I run
Code:
ls /dev/input/mouse*
I see four mice. How do I determine which one is my touchpad so that I can config my xorg.conf file?

Have you checked the USE flags available for that ?
If you have a synaptics pad you need to emerge that, too, before X can use it.

I'm assuming this is the direction that I need to look.
