I am new to Gentoo (and new to Linux for that matter) and would like to get a graphical desktop environment up and running on my PC. It seems as if Gentoo is not really meant for Linux newbies, but I want to learn a few things in my effort to getting it set up properly.
I followed the guide for performing a Gentoo 2006.0 Stage 3 installation for AMD64 and everything went rather smoothly. However, I would like to get a graphical desktop running. So far, I've read different articles that I have to install xorg-x11 and ati-drivers, but in the process I have to set certain variables in conf files, etc.
Is there a comprehensive guide out there that will take me through the process starting directly after the end of the stage 3 installation? What do I have to do first? Emerge xorg-x11?
My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X800XL (PCI-Express) running on an Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe (nForce4) motherboard.
I want to get a nice KDE desktop running in Gentoo. Are there extra settings I should have added during the Stage 3 installation or can I proceed from where I am at assuming that I followed the Gentoo 2006.0 Stage 3 installation for AMD64 guide to the 'T'?
Thank you for any help provided.
