Had an issue with the 2850 after a new Gentoo 2005.1 install... Solved it after some surfing and grepping, so thought I'd share...
The kernel was booting and mounting /boot (separate partition), but then panicked and said something to the effect of "VFS: cannot mount root (sda3) or unknown block(0,)" and suggested using a different "root=" line (for grub). Sorry for the vague recollection of the actual message.
My advice to 2850 installers is to make sure you've got the mptscsih and mptbase modules loaded. The Gentoo 2005.1 live CD did this, but the default .config for the kernel did not. I ended up compiling all the Fusion MPT options (under make menuconfig), which might be overkill, and it solved my problem.

More advice for 2850 installers... Don't forget to accout for the Dell Utlity partition when configuring Grub. The installation handbook always refrences /boot as "root (hd0,0)" when it's liekly "root (hd0,1)" _________________ While your waiting for your post to be answered, please help with unanswered posts. |
