System stopped creating mountpoints

My system started creating mountpoints for USB devices dynamically a couple of weeks ago. It was hella awesome with fstab entry and all that. I don't even know what did that, I suppose some new udev version with a smarter default ruleset or whatever.
Thing is, it stopped again doing that a couple days ago. And since I don't know where that behaviour came from in the first place, I dunno how to bring it back. It really bugs me, too, because it was awesome to have something just work. I mean, I know how to have udev do that for a given device, walk the device chain with udevinfo and all that, but it was good how it worked. Anyone know what happened there?

It was hal which did that - but not anymore.
Depending on what DE you are using (gnome for me) automounting can still be done and also the creation of mount-points to mount the devices by clicking an icon...just no automatic writing to /etc/fstab - but that is not necessary.
It is done with pmount or/and ivman. I can't say anything more specific because I did not look into it - it just works and that is enough for me and very nice too...
