...to actually emerge for example Gnome, or Fluxbox... and actually use it isntead of the OS X window manager, whatever.
This way ill basically have an almost 100% Driver compatible Mac computer (with osx running anyway) , but i would be running Fluxbox, which is 100% free and open, with other apps free and open...
all on my sweet Powerbook...
Its like having Linux, without really having Linux..
if its possible it would actually be an alternative for everybody who has an APple machine and wants to use linux (almost) and still get all the features OS X has |

a personal fluxbox appereance would fit much better on my powerbook. |

| Hmm, I haven't tried this myself (I'm not sick and tired of Apple graphics), but here's my 2 cents: you can run your mac without the GUI. At the loginwindow, type "console" as username and hit enter, and you'll be in a shell. Now you could start Apple's X11 system, and I don't see what would keep fluxbox or gnome from running on top of X11. But this is just a wild guess, you'll have to try yourself. |

Yep, you can do it. But there are some problems I was unable to resolve which made running X alone not very practical on my G4 iBook.
1. 2D graphics were very slow. Dragging a big window made my mp3s skip.
3D accel was nonexistant.
2. iBook freezes on resume. (Works fine in Apple GUI.)
3. Strange security bull$hit. Sometimes X would not start but hang unless I deleted ~/.Xauthority before typing startx.
I'm using the binary version of Xfree from Fink. Apple's X11 didn't work any better (or worse). If anybody can figure out how to get these issues resolved it might be worth fiddling with. Hell if I know how.... |

i guess the only thing left for me to use Linux on my powerbook is to install Linux itself.
but i wont have airport and 3d acceleration, which are essentials
i am sad |

You can emerge fluxbox on OS X. To get it to work, you need to copy /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc, then edit the file you just copied so that the last line says

Also, change X11 so it isn't rootless, that way fluxbox and your X11 apps have their own environment.

If you don't like Quartz, I'd say just install a full gentoo linux install and be done with it. (If you didn't already OWN a Powerbook, I'd tell you to save yourself some money and get a cheap Dell)
OS X (INCLUDING Quartz) is the main reason I bought my Macs...

I done this, but after I close X11, I have to rename ~/.xinitrc or delete it in order to run X11 next time.
Is there anyway can solve this problem ? |
