For some reason the spell checker in kword doesn't work. When I go to spell check a document, ALL the words are spelled wrong (or at least thats what the spell checker is saying) and it give no options. I have aspell emerged on my system

Thanks,
Rian

Check your default document language settings in Kword's settings.
Check your spell settings in Kword's settings.
Check your language setting in the aplied style settings.

the defualt is "en_us". I tried just plain "en", but that didn't work either. I also tried re-emerging koffice with the "spell" added to my USE flags, and that didn't work either.

Check if aspell works from the commandline.
Check your spell settings in kcontrol.
Try ispell - Kword can wirk with that too.

Code:

aspell -c x.x

produces the error:

Code:

no word lists can be found for en_US

Do you have the dictionary ( http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?aspell-en-6.0.0 ) installed?
It's a separate package.

I've got the same problem. I've installed kword, ispell, aspell, and aspell-en. Kword appears to have a blank dictionary. I've tried everything that zsoltika has suggested. I also tried playing with the "defaulSpell" entry in ~/.kde/share/config/kwordrc, which was originally blank. I tried "aspell" and "ispell" there, but I don't know what the format of that entry is supposed to be. Is there a logfile where kword might spit out errors?

Check your ~/.xsession-errors for errors during running kword.
BTW your defaultLanguage should be something like:
Code:
defaultLanguage=en_US
(if you prefer that selection).

Found it. Its a kspell2 bug.

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81415

Code:

Illegal format hash table /usr/lib/ispell/american.hash - expected magic2 0x9602, got 0x0
Illegal format hash table /usr/lib/ispell/british.hash - expected magic2 0x9602,  got 0x0

But I try changing the spell checker from Ispell to Aspell in kcontrol, and it doesn't acknowledge. Spelling works fine in other KDE apps. Oh well. The developers are aware. Thanks for pointing me to the .xession-errors, zsoltika.

The bug (for me) is this: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64403

I did all and I'm desperated. All other apps works fine, even kspread, with aspell. I am using kde 3.5.5 and latest koffice release (I tired both, 1.5.2 and latest 1.6-rc1). I hope someone can find one solution.

Really thanks.

Exactly the same problem here. For me it looks like a bad combination of versions of kdelibs and kword. For instance kdelibs-3.5.4 works fine with kword 1.5.2, but not with kword-1.6-rc1/-1.6. The latest kdelibs-3.5.5 don't work with any version of kword (according my tests). So, I really don't know what could be wrong there.

Ok regarding the kde-3.5.5 and koffice-1.5 trough 1.6 the resolution to this could be found on:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152417

The thing was that kspell2 was disabled in kdelibs for some reasons.. details on how to make it work are on page above..
