Hi there

I have just installed the 2.6.15-r1 kernel on my laptop, and had a lot of problems with my framebuffer...(I wanted the same resolution when booting from my hd as when i boot my laptop from the installation cd)

I have now read allmost the complete forum, but nobody is talking about the possibility of setting the "VESA default mode" in menuconfig==>device drivers==>graphics support==>VESA Default mode??

I have tried many combinations of settings in the graphics support section of menuconfig, compiled new kernels and again many combinations of display settings in the grup.conf.

None of it could help me with setting the resolution of my console when my gentoo boots-up.

Now when I only set the VESA default mode to f.ex 1024x768@60 in the menuconfig it WORKS, without any display-settings in grub.conf!

Here is my question, why is it working? anywhere i read in the forum everybody talks about setting the display in the grub.conf, but if I sets the display-setting in the grub.conf I get different kind of problems.

Is this "VESA default mode" in the menuconfig a new function, and therefore no-one knows about it or have I misunderstood anything?

Best regards
PM

First, what mode do you want it to be in?

Make sure that your kernel parameters are set correctly:
Code:
<*> Support for frame buffer devices
<*> VESA VGA graphics support
    VESA driver type (vesafb) -->
Console display driver support -->
   [*] Video mode selection support
   <*> Framebuffer Console support
   [*] Select compiled-in fonts
      As you prefer....

Here's the table of VESA modes
Code:

      640x    800x    1024x 1280x
     480       600      768     1024
256    769    771    773    775
32K    784    787    790    793
64K    785    788    791    794
16M    786    789    792    795

Set the FB device on the kernel line in GRUB.

Here's mine:
Code:
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/md1 vga=795 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr

Now, your console will boot in the specified mode.

Some people have problems with fbconsole and X, but I have none. I am using the above configuration for the consoles and use "nvidia" driver in X. Both work without problems and without interference.

Yes it helped.

Now I can control the resolution in my grub.conf, but just before I get the login prompt my screen gets black.

Anyone has any sugestions?

(When I used the default value in the menuconfig setup vesafb-tng and 1024x768@60 i did not have this problem)

To whom it concernes

Now it is booting as I want it to.

I used vesafb-tng instead of the vesafb. I also deleted the default value for the vesafb-tng.

My kernel-line is now:

kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr:3,102x768-32@60

One more thing be sure it all is in one line!

Thanks to all who read my message

Best regards... :D
